Asad Shafiq, a right-handed middle-order batsman who hails from Karachi, is another Pakistani who is a product of Pakistan’s thriving tape ball circuit. He made his first class debut in 2007 and scored a century in his first match against Hyderabad. He went on to have an impressive season including a double century, and ended the season just short of a thousand runs.

 

Asad continued to maintain his form and carried it forward in the following limited over domestic season where he had an impressive average of 54.14 after seven games. After his good performances on the domestic circuit he was then selected for national team and made his international debut against Bangladesh in Asia Cup. He was later selected for Pakistan’s England tour for ODI where he showed good skills with the bat by scoring maiden half century. His performances in England earned him a selection against South Africa tour of UAE for both ODI and Test teams.

 

Shafiq had good test debut against South Africa scoring 61 runs in the only innings he played in a Test match in the UAE. The real highlight of his international career came when Pakistan toured Sri Lanka in 2012, where Shafiq scored 277 runs in 3 Test Matches at an average of 64.25. 

 

He also played a number of gritty knocks in Pakistan's whitewash of England in the UAE in 2012, but he really established himself as a batsman capable of dominating at the highest level during Pakistan's 2013 tour of South Africa, where his 111 against an attack including Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander

Shafiq was selected to replace Younis Khan in Pakistan's limited overs team during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

 

Shafiq has been impressive in his short career so far and has become an established member of the Test team. His ODI performances, particularly in the Champions Trophy, resulted in his axing from the limited overs formats.

Asad Shafiq has been particularly impressive in Asian condiitons and has had notable performances against South Africa, Australia and New Zealand in recent times. With an average touching 42, the 29 year old Shafiq is expected to be a mainstay of Pakistan's test batting lineup, particularly after the retirements of Misbah ul Haq and Younis Khan.

After the 2015 World Cup, Shafiq was called up again to the ODI side in the home series against Zimbabwe but again failed to make a major impact in any of the three matches.
