Salman Afridi is one of the few players in the current U19 squad that didn’t tour South Africa earlier in 2012. He has broken though to become the wicketkeeper for the prestigious U19 World Cup on the basis of his good performances behind the stumps and being a handy batsman. Afridi has come through the ranks from the Under 15 setup where he began playing with Federally Administered Tribal Areas Under-15s and then the Under-19s. He began playing as a right handed middle order batsman and established himself as a useful contributor, his highlight a 108* in the second innings against Kohat Under-19s at the Jamrood Cricket Ground.

In the Inter-Region Under-19 One Day tournament he played for Abbottabad Under-19s and it was here that he first played as a wicketkeeper against Sialkot Under-19s. In this game, he made 33 runs and picked up 2 catches as Abbottabad won by 59 runs.

He eventually moved onto Karachi where he has been playing for the Pakistan International Airlines Under-19s as their regular keeper-batsman. Here he plays with fellow U19 colleagues Zia-Ul-Haq, Imam-Ul-Haq and Faraz Ali.

Pakistan U19’s top order success of late has meant that Afridi has not had the opportunity to score many runs in the setup. However he did manage a quickfire 22 off 19 balls in the final overs against England in a U19 World Cup Warm Up match. With wicketkeeper-batsmen becoming more so the norm in international cricket, it will be important that Afridi contributes lower order runs if he is to push for international selection.

Salman Afridi hasn't featured in top domestic cricket after last playing at Under 19 level in 2012.
