Javed Miandad has resigned from his position as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) director general with immediate effect. Miandad's resignation comes less than 24 hours after emergency meetings with officials and former and current players resulted in Younis Khan taking over the Pakistan captaincy from Shoaib Malik.

Javed Miandad has resigned from his position as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) director general with immediate effect. Miandad's resignation comes less than 24 hours after emergency meetings with officials and former and current players resulted in Younis Khan taking over the Pakistan captaincy from Shoaib Malik.

Reports emerging from Pakistan claim Miandad, who earlier said he would not get involved in the PCB's administrative matters, was not happy with interference from other board officials. It was also reported that Miandad was against the sacking of Malik as captain, and that he was willing to try and sort out the situation.

The PCB had pressed the panic button after Pakistan's humiliating defeat in the last ODI against Sri Lanka and Miandad's resignation is further indication of the tension simmering in the country's cricket.

Miandad was appointed in November 2008 and at the time was not a complete surprise as his name had been linked to several roles in the board, and he had also met Ijaz Butt, the chairman. Miandad had served as Pakistan coach three times in the past and left the post in acrimonious circumstances due to problems with the players, selectors or PCB officials.
