"I’m fit, confident and ready to play for Pakistan again if selected” : Junaid Khan
Junaid Khan is a man on a mission. A fast-bowler by trade with one hundred and fifty-seven international wickets to his name and nearing twenty-seven years of age, Junaid is also blessed with a great amount of optimism which seems to drive him forward through his career. Optimism and a will to succeed against overwhelming odds must be the only reason why someone with his skills who made an international debut in early 2011 has played only eighty-three international games so far is still hoping for a role in the Pakistan cricket's future teams.
Fresh from his fantastic bowling performances in the recent edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, Junaid Khan spoke exclusively to PakPassion.net about his recent excellent efforts directed towards yet another comeback in the Pakistan team, his appreciation of the legendary Pakistan fast-bowler Wasim Akram for his favourable remarks about his recent form and looked forward to being given a chance to represent Pakistan in the shorter format in the upcoming series against Australia.
Discarded for the 2016 tour of England when most pundits expected him to feature in the high-profile series, Junaid did not wallow in self-pity but busied himself in improving his skills and put them to the test in the 2016 edition of the BPL for Khulna Titans.
In fourteen matches, Junaid impressed one and all by picking up twenty wickets and was the second highest wicket-taker behind Dwayne Bravo. This is a record that he thoroughly enjoyed and is proud of as he remarked, “I felt I was in good rhythm before the start of this year’s edition of the BPL but the feeling of confidence that I got after taking four wickets in my opening game was really something else. I suppose the self-belief that one gets after taking wickets makes you feel that no goal is difficult to achieve. In fact, the confidence I feel in myself is very much like what I felt during my international appearances in 2013.
Junaid’s performance in the BPL may have astounded many but to the fast-bowler, the results are simply a result of the hard work that he undertook before the start of the tournament and the results are simply a logical conclusion to his pre-tournament preparation.
“I prepared well ahead of this tournament and worked very hard on the ‘slower one’ as I know that on Bangladesh pitches such deliveries with variation are crucial for the success of any bowler. Thankfully, it appears that amongst all the bowlers on display in the BPL, Dwayne Bravo’s and my slower deliveries proved to be most effective in the tournament. What I am really pleased about is that I took wickets with the new ball and when I came on towards the end of the innings, I was successful with Yorkers, as well as with slower and faster bouncers. I bowled with maximum variation and was very successful which is quite pleasing for me.”
To many who have followed Junaid Khan’s international career with interest, the story of his exclusion is a painful one to read but no one can doubt the steely determination in Junaid to continue working hard when many would have fallen on the wayside and thrown in the towel. Indeed his recent BPL performance was in a way a wake-up call for the selectors who have so far ignored him as he noted, “To be dropped and discarded from international tours such as the one for England was a very tough for me and I felt very distraught. I was lucky then to have the support of my family as well the media in such trying times. I made up my mind that I would do my utmost to prove and show to the world that I am still capable of bigger things. This is why even when I was not part of the squad bound for England, I was practising and trying to improve myself. The result of that hard work and determination bore fruit in the manner in which I performed in the BPL.”
A startling statistic recently reported on social media indicates that out of the sixty-five Twenty20s which have been played by Pakistan since Junaid Khan’s debut in April 2011, he has played in just nine games. Whilst the ability to score own goals is not a rarity for Pakistan selectors, the continued exclusion of Junaid remains a mystery to many, including the bowler himself.
“Anyone who looks at my domestic record will see that I have one hundred and fourteen wickets in the Twenty20 format with a more than decent economy rate of around 6.7. My experience is also varied as I have played in Pakistan as well as with counties in England so I suppose shock is one way to describe my feelings on this issue and the fact that I have played such little international cricket is also beyond belief.”
So what is the case against Junaid Khan? Apart from the objection that his experience in BPL does not match the pressures one would encounter in international games, there is also the red-herring of fitness which is brought into discussions. Junaid for his part is more than happy to refute such negative inferences saying that “There are several critics who always look down on the standard of BPL as if it was the same as our domestic tournaments. Let me remind them that apart from the fact that each BPL team has four international players there is the little matter of the rest of team being composed of quality local players. This is the kind of team against which I have performed and ended up as the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament. After all, Mohammad Amir also made his way back to the Pakistan team on the back of some excellent performances in the last edition of the BPL. And for those worried about my fitness, I am sure they would have noted the fact that I played fourteen games within four weeks during this tournament. This type of effort in Twenty20 games requires a lot more energy than what is needed even in Test matches.”
There is no better judge of good left-hand fast-bowling talent than the legendary bowler himself, Wasim Akram. And when the Sultan of Swing recently commented on Junaid’s fine recent form, it filled the fast-bowler with joy which he could barely hide as he remarked, “I would also hope that just like what Wasim Akram tweeted about why I deserved to be selected based upon how well I was bowling with good rhythm and variation, some other legends of the game will also take up my case. I cannot describe how important it is for the self-confidence of any player to be appreciated in such a way by legendary players such as the great Wasim Akram.”
As always and in line with the wishes of aspiring players, Junaid’s thoughts are also centred around the goal of representing his country. He understands that he needs to perform well and continue performing to regain his place in the national team. Whilst the route to that elusive comeback would be a tortuous one, Junaid Khan is under no illusions about what he must do to make himself noticed by the Pakistan selectors again as he concluded “What I really want to do is take part in the National One-Day cup which is starting on the 17th of December and perform well in this important tournament. If all goes to plan there and in the same way as it has done during the BPL, my target and hope is to make a comeback for Pakistan in the One-Day format for the upcoming series against Australia. I know that the team for this format is yet to be decided and it is my hope that the selectors will pay attention to my recent performances and allow me a chance to represent Pakistan once again. I’m fit, confident and ready to play for Pakistan again if selected.”Last edited by Abdullah719; 10th December 2016 at 22:14.

Seems like Selectors have given him a Green Signal that He would be picked if he proves his form and fitness in the National One Day Cup.
Which is fine.
He could also be picked if any pacer gets injured or looks seriously out of form.

Fresh from his brilliant bowling performances in the recent edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Pakistan's out-of-favour left-arm pacer Junaid Khan is hoping to put up a similar kind of performance in the upcoming National One-Day cup in order to gain his place back into the national squad.
Junaid, who played his last match for Pakistan in the Test series against Sri Lanka in June 2015, revealed that his target is to represent the country in the Twenty20 and One-Day formats in the upcoming series against Australia beginning on January 13 at the Gabba.
"What I really want to do is take part in the National One-Day cup which is starting on the 17th of December and perform well in this important tournament. If all goes to plan there and in the same way as it has done during the BPL, my target and hope is to make a comeback for Pakistan in the Twenty20 and One-Day formats for the upcoming series against Australia," Pakpassion.net quoted Junaid as saying.
Asserting that he is absolutely fit and ready to play for Pakistan if selected, Junaid said that he hopes to grab national selectors' attention with his recent performances.
"I know that the teams for these formats are yet to be decided and it is my hope that the selectors will pay attention to my recent performances and allow me a chance to represent Pakistan once again. I'm fit, confident and ready to play for Pakistan again if selected," the pacer said.
The 27-year-old, who was discarded for the 2016 tour of England when most pundits expected him to feature in the high-profile series, did not wallow in self-pity and instead focused on improving his skills and put them to the test for Khulna Titans in the 2016 edition of the BPL.
In fourteen matches, Junaid picked up 20 wickets and emerged as the second highest wicket-taker behind Dwayne Bravo.
Talking about his exclusion from the England series, Junaid said, "To be dropped and discarded from international tours such as the one for England was a very tough for me and I felt very distraught. I was lucky then to have the support of my family as well the media in such trying times. I made up my mind that I would do my utmost to prove and show to the world that I am still capable of bigger things. This is why even when I was not part of the squad bound for England, I was practicing and trying to improve myself. The result of that hard work and determination bore fruit in the manner in which I performed in the BPL."
Junaid, who made his international debut in early 2011, has played only 83 international games so far and is still hoping for a role in the Pakistan cricket's future teams.

He should be in the Pakistan team in all formats. Not as skilled as Amir with the new ball or as excellent as Riaz with the old but he is good all-round and on top of that, is able to handle pressure quite well.

Should be in the ODI side before the test side. He is more suited for the ODI format. In T20s he has a knack of getting carted to all parts, in Tests he doesn't have the ability to use the new ball effectively (although he would be massive upgrade on Rahat).
My ideal ODI bowling line-up would be:
Amir
Junaid
Wahab
Hasan
Imad
Although we might be severely missing a specialist spinner with penetration like Ajmal.
-

Considering how Inzi works don't be surprised if you get the same pacers for the ODI squad.
Also the ODI captain doesn't rate Junaid. Azhar had him in his Baluchistan side and dropped him after a match or two for some unknown youngster. Granted Junaid wasn't setting the world on fire in those one or two matches.

I think he can be in the squad but I feel that Sohail khan is a better fit for our ODI team with his batting ability.
Amir , wahab , sohail and hasan ; all can bat a bit.
It is either a heartache or a headache ..Argh relationships.
-
19th December 2016, 15:31 #34
If you don't have confidence in Sohail Khan and Imran Khan, you don't want to select Asif than immefiately recall Junaid Khan and put him into 2nd Test.
-
19th December 2016, 16:16 #35
I want Junaid Khan to come back but not in the place of a right hand bowler, even if he's as slow as Imran Khan or as lethargic as Sohail. These guys should only be replaced by a right-hander. Maybe Asif or Tabish Khan, anyone really but with majority of the bowlers being left handers in the squad, there is little to select from when the opposition has more left handed batters (like Aus does currently).

Sorry I haven't been watching JK of late but has the ability to swing ball both ways still with JK or has he lost it? I mean im sure thats the minimum requirement for a fast bowler to play for Pak?
He did a have a golden arm in the Pak / Ind series but not sure if he still has that ability?

Still skeptical of Junaid. Yes he had a good performance in the BPL, but his bowling averages in this season's QEA Trophy, Departmental One Day Cup and National T20 Cup read 43, 44 and 50.
He needs to do more in domestic cricket before being granted a recall. That doesn't justify Rahat or Irfan's inclusions though, we should move on from them too.

After a strong BPL I was sure that Junaid will perform decent wnough in Departments List A cup and will be selected for Pakistan team.
But
Once again his performances did not warrant a comeback.
6 List A wickets at an average of 44 and a SR of 57 in 6-7 List A matches for Wapda.
Irfan is a big gamble again since he can breakdown anytime but He has been in very good form while Rahat in limited overs format is more poor than Test Cricket and is genuine number 11 and poor fielder so instead of him Sohail Khan should have been picked because of his batting ability at number 8 or 9 plus 10 overs in 3 spells isn't a matter of concern for him. Sohail should have been on bench for first two three Odi's atleast giving Hasan the deserved oppurtunity. Incase Amir doesn't recover in time than Sohail could have replaced him in the playing eleven.

Instead of picking genuine number 11 Rahat who is a poor fielder and an average List A bowler don't you think we should have picked Sohail Khan ? 10 overs aren't a concern. Swings the new ball. Bowls good slower balls, good yorker, good slower bouncer and can tonk a few down the order with the Bat.
Though if selectors opted for say Atif Jabbar or Rumman Raees or Mohammad Abass than I wouldn't have complained at Sohail's ommision but Rahat ahead of Sohail ? makes no sense.

I think Junaid was definitely in the selectors minds after his performance in the BPL but he was very mediocre in the departmental one day cup. Irfan should be in the squad but JK should be there over Rahat but I can live with the decision cos he didn't live up to expectations following BPL. He's started the regional cup well though so hopefully he can play against West Indies

EXactly what I wanted as well, he is the perfect ODI bowler. Saw a segment of Shoaib Akhtar on TV saying the same thing. He was saying that Sohail is only a 10 over bowler anyways (as shown by his fitness) he should be playing ODIs not tests. If only our selectors had brains...

I feel if there is any Int Cricket left in Sohail than its only Odi Cricket. I feel if we did not want to try Atif, Abass or Rumman than we should have picked Sohail for this series and Odi series against West Indies and than make a call whether he would be able to play champions trophy 2017 and WC2019 at optimum performance level or not ? If they felt yes than He should have continued if No than He should have been dropped.
Rahat's selection makes No sense because in last 4 years he has hardly been picked for Odi team and rightly so. Whenever he was picked he did nothing special and his List A record is just Ok considering other bowlers and no recent improvement in his limited overs skills has been observed. Hence there was no justification to pick him.

Yeah you are right.
Al Amin was cleared but looks so dodgy.
Anyways, I checked 2016 BPL video of Juni Bhai and there he didn't look as bad as Al Amin. In fact action looked ok to me.
So maybe he is safe.
I have seen some horrendous videos of Juni in the past which in slow-mo resulted in considerable extension which makes me doubt his action. But as you say, there is also a very good chance he may be reported but cleared like Al Amin.
Better videos would help us understand where he stands. Those damned full sleeves makes things hard.Last edited by sensible-indian-fan; 9th January 2017 at 10:22.

I'm hoping for an Amir injury, since that is the only way he can come back in the side..
Apparently Junaid was first brought in the side back in 2011 since he was a guy who bowled 'just like Mohammad Amir'

LAHORE–JANUARY 9, 2017: Following Mohammad Irfan’s return to Pakistan due to his mother’s death, the chief selector Inzamam ul Haq after consulting the team management has named fast bowler Junaid Khan as Mohammad Irfan’s replacement for the five-match ODI series against Australia commencing from January 13, 2017.

Luck has brought him within striking distance to play for Pakistan again. He still is unlikely to play the first couple of ODIs if Wahab & Amir are fit to play.
Hasan Ali would play ahead of Junaid.
Junaid might get his chance when we want to rest Amir as he is unlikely to play all games especially if the series gets decided in the first few matches.

Apparently Junaid Khan couldn't swing the new ball a millimeter.. however he swung it both ways from his first over.. got Warner out and swung quite a few away from him as well.. poor guy has been bowling on flat tracks all his life.. and people complain he's not swinging it when there's no swing available.. swing and bounce made Junaid Khan even more lethal than Amir with the new ball

I'd like to see Junaid being given a chance on some bowler friendly tracks and pitches with a bit of life.
Most of his international cricket has been on flat decks which is harsh to make a judgement call on.

Junaid has said this all along. Give me a chance on tracks away from Asia, then judge me.

concedes 20 runs in the 2nd last over to gift ISB win after a great over bowled by Hasan. Terrible bowler who is finished. Needs to take retirement asap.

Can't believe he was recalled to the national team.
Or how come he has fans. On top of suspected action, he's rubbish.
Have his fans given up on him yet?

Made Shane Watson look like Dale Stein in comparison. Please leave him to go play minor leagues in England or something.

One of the worst bowlers produced by Pakistan in history.
Hope he never plays for Pakistan again. A beggar's Umar Gul.Last edited by Abdullah719; 10th February 2017 at 02:47.
