"I have nothing personal against Mickey Arthur" : Mohsin Khan
Mohsin Hasan Khan’s association with Pakistan cricket has been a long and proud one. From a dashing opening batsman who scored 4586 runs in his 123 international appearances for Pakistan to the position of Head Coach which saw his team inflict their first 3-0 whitewash on England, Mohsin Hasan Khan’s credentials as a Pakistan stalwart are undoubtable.
After a spell on the sidelines of Pakistan cricket, recently he has been appointed as Chairman of a Cricket committee which has been tasked with advising the PCB Chairman, Ehsan Mani, with recommendations for improvement of Pakistan cricket.
Whilst Mohsin’s role as a senior and well-established voice in the matters of Pakistan cricket has a few doubters, there have been some dissenting voices raised against him in regard to his suitability as Chairman of the Cricket Committee based on remarks about Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as well as comments regarding Head Coach Mickey Arthur.
Speaking with PakPassion.net, the former Pakistan Head Coach sought to clarify his stance on these issues and to correct some of the stories and rumours surrounding him.
“The comments regarding Sarfaraz Ahmed not being a capable captain and that he should be replaced as Test skipper have been taken totally out of context and have been fabricated by sections of the media. I made the comment 18 months ago that it would perhaps be too much to ask of Sarfaraz to captain in all three formats and that it may be better for him and for the team to make him skipper in the two shorter formats initially and then at a later date make him Test skipper. I have absolutely no doubt about Sarfaraz Ahmed's capability and credentials as skipper and never have done, my only suggestion was to make him captain in all three formats at the right time. He is doing a fine job, and long may that continue.”
The setup of the Cricket Committee has been welcomed by most observers as an excellent step towards the betterment of the game in Pakistan. The importance of this committee has been highlighted by PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani on numerous occasions and the appointment of Mohsin Khan demonstrates the high regard that the PCB hierarchy holds the former cricketer in. This is a fact that Mohsin was quick to highlight but also expressed his disappointment at some aspersions being cast on his character, “I'm really looking forward to working with the current Pakistan Cricket Board hierarchy as I feel they are credible and honest people, unlike the previous set-up. Because I have been asked by Chairman PCB Mr. Ehsan Mani with the approval of Prime Minster Imran Khan who is the Patron and Chief of PCB to Chair the Cricket Committee, this has resulted in sections of the media finding this too hard to accept and they are therefore coming up with nonsensical stories about me. I am honoured to have been asked to Chair the Cricket Committee and as I have done throughout my life I will represent Pakistan to the best of my ability and will serve for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.”
The remit of the Cricket Committee is a complex and comprehensive one. The recommendations made by the committee if approved by the PCB Chairman will have far-reaching and significant effects in the manner in which cricket is run in Pakistan. This is a role that Mohsin is not taking lightly and as he explained, the role of the selection committee and the performance of the current Head Coach Mickey Arthur will all be put through the scanner.
“My work on the Cricket Committee will see that the Committee members and I will scrutinise the work of Mickey Arthur, Sarfaraz Ahmed and the Selectors. I have nothing personal against Mickey Arthur and am prepared to work with anyone for the betterment of Pakistan cricket, but my line of reporting is into the Chairman. Our remit is to ensure that improvements are made in Pakistan cricket at the international level and the domestic level. We will also be responsible for examining the state of domestic cricket in Pakistan and we have been specifically asked by Ehsan Mani to look into areas of domestic cricket that we feel need to be changed and improved upon. Let me repeat and make it clear though I report into the Chairman and nobody else and my work will be done as always on merit and with the full input of my fellow committee members. ”
As Mohsin Hasan Khan has realized from the spate of some unwelcome media interest and reporting on his appointment as well as some remarks attributed to him regarding Mickey Arthur and Sarfaraz Ahmed, life in the public eye is something he will need to get used to once again as he starts work as Chairman of the Cricket Committee. Apart from addressing the serious issues related to Pakistan cricket that he will need to look at soon, the former Pakistan batsman and Head Coach also has to ensure that he has the full trust of all stakeholders of the game in Pakistan. In this regard, Mohsin had no doubts that regardless of some of the baseless stories being promoted by elements of the media, he will be focussed on serving Pakistan cricket to the best of his abilities, “the stories of me being removed as the Cricket Committee Chairman and not being allowed to speak to the media are nonsensical and fabricated. I have spoken with Ehsan Mani about my role and he has assured me not to worry about my role and to ignore the false stories from sections of the media. The Chairman is the one who will have the final say on any changes that are to be made and my Committee and I are there in an advisory role. Our decisions will be based on merit and merit alone and I look forward to working without any bias as I feel it is our duty to serve Pakistan cricket well,” he concluded.Last edited by Abdullah719; 13th November 2018 at 01:29.

You can easily juxtapose Mohsin Khan’s name with Javed Miandad or Abdul Qadir or the army of bitter ex cricketers.

“The comments regarding Sarfraz Ahmed not being a capable captain and that he should be replaced as Test skipper have been taken totally out of context and have been fabricated by sections of the media,” said Khan quoted PakPassion.net. The former cricketer, who has previously served as the coach of Pakistan cricket team, is currently the Pakistan Cricket Board’s cricket committee chairman.
Clearing it out, Khan said he said the statement 18 months ago. “I made the comment 18 months ago that it would perhaps be too much to ask of Sarfaraz to captain in all three formats and that it may be better for him and for the team to make him skipper in the two shorter formats initially and then at a later date make him Test skipper,’ he added.
Pakistan Cricket Board cricket committee chairman, Khan, had reportedly opined that Sarfraz Ahmed should be relieved from his Test captaincy, which stirred a debate among the cricketing circles.
The former batsman went on to applaud Sarfraz for his performance as the captain, under whose leadership Pakistan went on to claim the coveted Champions Trophy last year.
“I have absolutely no doubt about Sarfraz’s capability and credentials as skipper and never have done, my only suggestion was to make him captain in all three formats at the right time. He is doing a fine job, and long may that continue,” he added.
After drawing the 50-overs series 1-1 against New Zeland, Sarfraz’s eleven would take on the Kiwis in a Test series, in the coming days.

I'll be surprised if Mohsin is still on the committee by the end of the year to be honest.
If he doesn't go over this, he'll say something else crazy.

ISLAMABAD: Head of Pakistan Cricket Board’s Cricket Committee Mohsin Khan on Friday said the national team was lacking specialised opening pair which the former Test opener termed would be a major drawback in the World Cup starting on May 30.
Talking to a private news channel, Mohsin reckoned the team’s middle-order batting could not be settled due to which only two players bear all the pressure.
“In a huge event like the World Cup, Pakistan need to have specialised and settled opening pair which can give the team solid start in big-pressure games; and here we are lacking,” Mohsin, who played 48 Tests for Pakistan from 1978 to 1986, said.
“Quality all-rounders are vital for any team to win matches. [Therefore] we need to further boost the performance of available all-rounders to win the mega event,” he added.
He termed mental fitness was more important than physical strength for the players to perform in the forthcoming World Cup being staged in England and Wales.
“During the recent ODI series against Australia [in the UAE], the Pakistan players could not produce good performance due to lacking in mental fitness. They must have been prepared mentally before playing against a tough opponent,” he insisted.
“A good player and team always perform under pressure,” the 64-year-old Mohsan said, adding that the present Pakistan team had the potential to do well.
“We have the option of six to seven fast bowlers for selection who can perform well in the World Cup,” Mohsin, who also played 75 ODIs, said and added that due to different weather conditions in England the selectors could also pick spinners.

LAHORE: After failing to convince the patron-in-chief of Pakistan Cricket Board, Prime Minister Imran Khan over the proposed model of domestic cricket structure which comprised eight regional teams at the top and as many regional sides in the Grade-II and with a sponsorship role for the departments, the PCB think-tank has decided to formulate a new model on provincial basis that will restrict the teams to six.
The PM had rejected the proposed draft when a delegation of the PCB met him in Islamabad last month comprising all top officials. Imran, in turn, had asked the delegation to come up with a draft comprising six teams at the first-class level.
Dawn learnt on authority that in order to implement the instructions given by the prime minister, a plan has been devised under which Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, KP and Federal Areas cricket associations will be formed, thus ending the current set-up of 16 regional bodies. In the domestic cricket circuit — from U-16 to first-class cricket — six teams will be representing their respective provinces with Punjab fielding two teams in each tournament while other provinces will enter one team apiece. However, the associations at city level will continue to work to feed the players to the provincial teams and to play B-grade cricket.
“We are starting work on the new programme to base the domestic cricket on provincial level as per the instructions of the prime minister. The current affiliated departments of the PCB will be asked to sponsor the provincial associations and if they are not ready to do it, then the PCB will run it from its own sources,” a PCB official said.
The official, on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that soon the exercise to make the provincial base system will start and, in the first step, clubs across the country will be scrutinised. He said no bogus club will be allowed to function which had been existing in big numbers and were misusing the funds and precious time of the PCB. He ensured that very strict scrutiny process will commence soon.
“After completing the draft of the system — from club to provincial level — and after gaining the approval of the patron, an amendment in the PCB constitution will be sought to implement the new system in letter and spirit,” he said.
However, the official admitted that in the new system, the players currently representing the departments may lose their jobs but by appearing for their provincial teams they will get match fees.
He also admitted that match fees could not be the alternate of the monthly salaries which the cricketers were getting from their departments for representing their teams in the current domestic system, but they will get good money by representing the provincial teams.
It may be mentioned here that several former cricketers, who had earned handsome amounts of money by representing the departments and by holding key posts on sports basis in leading departments such as PIA, in banking industry and other organisations, are vehemently opposing the idea of abolishing the role of departmental cricket.
According to them, the departments are not only a big source for the cricketers to earn good money but also enjoy their game under a comfortable atmosphere which may not be available at regional or provincial levels.
It may be mentioned here that the provincial-based system had already been tested during the tenure of retired Lt Gen Tauqir Zia back in 2002 but it was not very successful.
