[Report] Rohit Sharma to Replace Virat Kohli as India's Limited-Overs Captain After T20 World Cup

There could be a change in leadership as far as India’s limited-overs set up is concerned with captain Virat Kohli likely to step down from the role and hand over the duties to his deputy Rohit Sharma. Kohli is the current India skipper across formats having established himself among one of the all-time greats.

There have been rumours of Rohit taking over the charge, at least in T20Is, considering his record as stand-in captain with IPL success where he has Mumbai Indians to five titles further boosting his claim. However, this could become reality once the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup gets over in the UAE with Kohli now more keen to concentrate on his batting.

“Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world,” The Times of India quoted sources as saying.

Kohli, 32, has so far led India in 95 ODIs, and with 65 wins along with 27 defeats, has a winning percentage of 70.43. In 45 T20Is so far where he has been the captain, India have won 27 times while losing 14 times.

On the other hand, Rohit, 34, has led India 10 times in ODIs and led them to victories on eight occasions while losing twice. In T20Is, he has captained them 19 times of which they have won 15 and lost four.

“It will wrap up a historic Test cycle from an India perspective. Virat is also the first to realise that his overall responsibilities as captain across formats are taking a toll on his batting. He needs that space and freshness because he has a lot more to offer. If Rohit takes over as whiteball captain, Virat can continue leading India’s red-ball aspirations and work on his T20 and One-day batting. He’s just 32 and given his fitness, he will easily play top cricket for another five to six years at least,” the report further quoted sources as saying.

One of the biggest criticisms of Kohli’s captaincy is his failure to land a major ICC trophy since taking over the charge of the team. Recently, in June, India lost in the final of the World Test Championship as well which further fueled the talks.

However, as per the TOI report, Kohli, Rohit and India team management have had meetings in the past few months over the change of guard, at least in white-ball cricket.

Kohli is the biggest star in the game by a country mile and he has a very dominating personality. When he is on the field, the spotlight is always on him.

As a result, it will be very difficult to have someone else lead the team in his presence.

Rohit is an all-time great himself but he doesn’t have the star quality of Kohli and is more laidback.

For him to lead the team effectively, Kohli will have to mellow down and let Rohit emerge as the top guy.

I am not sure if it would be possible.

Kholi is too big of a name to play under anyone. He is one who makes the calls and sticks to it regardless of the backlash.

I don’t see him giving up his pole position. His form will recover, just depends on when.

Form is temporary. Class is permanent.

There is no alternative to Dhoni.

Kohli is too big to play under someone.

Fans have a hard time grasping the concept of accountability.

Can't blame them cos they are used to see their captains leading for a decade or so.

It doesnt matter if Rohit js stopgap or not.

It doesnt matter if Rohit can captain for 5 yearsor 1 year or 5 months.

    The key is accountability.

When you install systems for accountability, you dont have to worry about who is captain cos teh system is flexible.

A flexible system destroys power structure and promotes meritocracy.

Even if a dud like Rahane captaining the test team will NOT be an issue cos if he keeps flopping as a player, he will be replaced in a jiffy.

Yes, you need to give time to the new captain but if he is a hopeless dud, then you chuck him out.

Imagine a culture where a captain can't relax.

Why do you think Indian bowlers are the best in the world?

    Its no rocket science.

Should have happened after WC 2019 but as they say... better late than never.

Rohit can easily captain us until at least the 2023 home world cup.

This boat has unfortunately sailed. Rohit is 34 already and would be over 35 by the time next WC comes along. They should now let virat captain for as long as he wants and appoint a younger VC maybe Pant ASAP.

    Bingo.

I don’t know if you watch F1, but it’s like telling Hamilton that Bottas will be the number one driver..it just doesn’t happen.

However, it’ll be interesting to see how the team progresses under Rohit

Virat Kohli will remain captain: BCCI treasurer dismisses rumours of Rohit Sharma taking over as India's limited-overs skipper

Amid reports doing the rounds that Rohit Sharma is set to take over from Virat Kohli as a limited-overs captain, BCCI treasurer has dismissed all such rumours completely.

On Monday (September 13), BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has dismissed all rumours of Rohit Sharma set to take over as India's white-ball captain from Virat Kohli. The BCCI treasurer has made it clear that Hitman won't take over as the captain in the shorter formats post the T20 World Cup, in the UAE.

There was a report, in Times of India, which claimed that Kohli is willing to step down from the top spot in the limited-overs format and has already informed the team management and Rohit about his decision. However, Dhumal reacted to the rumours and has put an end to the speculations.

"This is all rubbish. Nothing (as) such is happening. This is all what you guys (media) are talking about. BCCI has not met or discussed anything on this issue (split captaincy)," Dhumal told IANS. "Virat will remain as the captain (of all formats)," the BCCI treasurer was quoted as saying by IANS.

Since India failed to win the 2019 ODI World Cup, in England and Wales, Kohli's captaincy has been under the scanner especially in the shorter formats. So far, the 32-year-old has led India in two ICC events in white-ball cricket but the Men in Blue returned without a trophy despite playing very well. Split captaincy debate surfaced once again after Kohli & Co. failed to win the inaugural WTC final, versus New Zealand, in mid-June in Southampton. Back then, many thought Kohli can give up limited-overs captaincy and take the team further ahead in the purest format of the game.

While Dhumal has completely denied all reports of Rohit to serve as captain in the white-ball formats, the topic might once again gain precedence if Kohli fails to guide India to the title in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

    Ganguly never played under Dhoni..

Dravid replaced Ganguly as ODI captain back in 2006 until Dhoni eventually took over that role in 2008/09 after Ganguly retired. Same thing in Tests but I think Kumble was also captain for a brief period of time in 2008.

Ganguly played 3 Tests and 9 ODIs under Dhoni.

Infact Ganguly was MOTM of Kanpur Test v SA where Dhoni captained in Test for first time.

Rohit Sharma is 34 and will be 36 by the 2023 WC. Possibly a stop gap arrangement as I cant see him playing many ICC tournaments beyond 2023 but, you never know.

2023 WC is in India and as home team they will start as favorites. Would have been good opportunity for Kohli to win a WC and further soldify his legacy but, looks like Rohit will have that chance now.

Age is overrated aspect in subcontinent cricket. They play till 40. So, Rohit can captain 3-4 years easily if not more.

Make Rahul or Pant or whoever is next in line as captain after Kohli and Rohit retirement.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal on Monday rubbished reports of Virat Kohli stepping down as India's limited-overs skipper after the T20 World Cup, saying that the board has not discussed anything on this matter and that he will continue to captain the team in all formats. "This is all rubbish. Nothing as such is going to happen. This is all media creation," Arun Dhumal told NDTV. "BCCI has not met or discussed anything on this issue," he said.

If there is one current player under whom Kohli will be ok to play, it's Rohit. Already during crisis moments in LOIs/T20s I've seen Rohit step in and override what Kohli was suggesting and Virat didn't seem to have a problem with that. And whenever Bumrah was bowling, Virat stood at the fence while Rohit (Bumrah's IPL captain) was the one standing with him making plans.

Top BCCI official clears the air, addresses reports of Rohit replacing Kohli as India's ODI, T20I captain after T20 WC
With reports emerging that Rohit Sharma may replace Virat Kohli as India's captain in white-ball formats, a top BCCI official has addressed the topic.

On Monday, reports surfaced in Indian media that Rohit Sharma will be taking over as India's ODI and T20I captain from Virat Kohli after the T20 World Cup. The report, first out in a leading newspaper daily, sent the country into a frenzy as the concept of split captaincy is one that has been heavily debated but no action seems to have been taken by the BCCI towards it.

Earlier in the day, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla rubbished the reports, saying there has been nothing discussed on the idea of split captaincy. And now, another top official of the board, secretary Jay Shah, has addressed the rumours, announcing that as long as India continue to perform, there will be no change in guard.

"As long as a team is performing while on the crease, the question of change in captaincy doesn’t arise," Shah told The Indian Express.

While Kohli has been a terrific Test captain – he is the country's most successful Test skipper leading India to 38 wins from 65 matches – the team is yet to win a major trophy under his leadership since 2017 when MS Dhoni stepped away. Under Kohli, India reached the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017 and the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup, and while the team played brilliantly through the tournament, it stumbled in the final hurdles. Kohli is also yet to win an IPL trophy as captain.

Meanwhile, Rohit has proven his leadership skills more than once. He has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles – in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 – and his record while leading India is equally impressive. In 10 ODIs with Rohit as captain, India has won 8 as under him India secured the 2018 Asia Cup title, a tournament in which Kohli was rested. In T20Is, Rohit has led India in 19 matches, of which the team has won 15, including the Nidahas Trophy title victory in March of 2018.

Rohit is of an age where I think he has the tactical understanding BUT he can't be captain for a lot of years. I always feel a captain should be picked with enough in him for 2 world cup cycles, and nowadays 4 WTC cycles.

The problem is, I envision this as the days of the KOhli/Dhoni era, where Dhoni was such a huge personality he still set the field even when Kohli was captain.

Rohit is a good LOI captain and he can play 3-4 years more. That's enough time for me to make this change.

After Rohit, the likes of KL, Pant, Gill, Shaw or Iyer can play passing the ball game to decide who is gonna be the next captain.

No point of giving captaincy to KL.

    Agree
I don't see any serious issues between Kohli and Rohit apart from couple of opinion differences.
They have good relationship. All these are media speculations. Kohli won't mind to play under Rohit captaincy.

Kohli will remain captain as of now.

But since we are discussing. KL Rahul could be the next captain. What we really need is a youngtser with a storng personality and great cricketing brain.

We have two personalities in Pant and Pandya but imagine the chaos lol

    Thank god.

India's fortunes in ICC events might have actually changed with a calm, composed and more tactically astute captain in charge.

It's not like that's ever worked for India in the past

They're massive favorites for the 23 WC and among the favorites for the T20 WC. He'll be sacked if India don't win the T20 WC or WC in 23 at home. There will be nowhere for Kohli to hide after that and even his name and star power wont be able to save him then.

I think he will stay as captain until he doesn’t want the job. In any case I can see them winning the World T20 and I would expect them to win the WC in 2023.

Rohit is an all-time great himself but he doesn’t have the star quality of Kohli and is more laidback.

For him to lead the team effectively, Kohli will have to mellow down and let Rohit emerge as the top guy.

I am not sure if it would be possible.
Last few months Virat Kohli is facing serious heat from the media & fan. He is no more the undisputed superstar of Indian cricket any more

The voices asking for his dismissal is getting louder and louder. If India does not win world T20 - Kohli is most likely done as LOI captain

The problem is, I envision this as the days of the KOhli/Dhoni era, where Dhoni was such a huge personality he still set the field even when Kohli was captain.
Rohit Sharma will be short term captain for may be 2-3 years but it does not matter. We can evaluate the option post 2023 World Cup

Virat Kohli announces shock decision to step down as India captain after T20 World Cup

Virat Kohli has announced that he will step down as India 's T20 captain after the upcoming T20 World Cup, but he will remain their skipper in Test and ODI cricket.

Kohli became India's Test captain in 2014 after MS Dhoni's retirement and he took over as skipper in all formats in 2017, with Dhoni stepping down as white-ball captain.

The 32-year-old cited his "immense workload" as the reason behind his decision, which will allow him "to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket".

Kohli intends to still play T20Is for India and he will be desperate to end his time in charge with a World Cup win.

In a statement, Kohli said: "I have been fortunate enough to not only represent India but also lead the Indian Cricket Team to my utmost capability.

"I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. I couldn't have done it without them - the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win.

"Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket.

"I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward.

"Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I've decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.

"I have also spoken to the secretary Mr Jay Shah and the President of BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the selectors about the same. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability."

Kohli has won zero tournament in his career as a captain. Even in IPL he could not win one title even after captaining the side for 10 years. Should have been replaced by Rohit long back. He probably wants to retire from T20.

Kohli is one of the main reasons why we couldn't win WC '19.

Sooner he leaves captaincy in ODIs

Rohit Sharma 'keeping India above Mumbai Indians', IPL 2021 absence part of workload management: Report

Rohit Sharma didn't feature in Mumbai Indians' IPL 2021 match against Chennai Super Kings. His absence was reportedly down to workload management.

With the T20 World Cup coming, Rohit is keen to manage his workload.
The opening batsman, hence, didn't feature against CSK in the MI's previous match in IPL 2021
Mumbai Indians (MI) began the UAE leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on a losing note as the defending champions went down fighting against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). MI skipper Rohit Sharma wasn't a part of the match but his absence wasn't down to a last-minute injury issue.

Rohit, who has established himself into Team India's Test plans as well, has had an extremely busy 2021. Be it the tour of Australia, the home series against England or the tour of the United Kingdom, Rohit has been an ever-present figure in the Indian team. As per a report in the Times of India, Rohit is concretely planning his next 24 months, keeping the twin T20 World Cups and the 2023 ODI World Cup in mind.

Since missing out on a spot in the victorious Indian team at the 2011 World Cup, Rohit has been keen to lift the elusive trophy at least once in his career. The opportunities he has gotten thus far, however, haven't been sufficient in fulfilling the Hitman's dream.

With this year as well as the next two years offering as many as three opportunities to become a world champion, Rohit is keen to plan his assignments to the finest of details.

"We (the franchise) keep India first. He's keeping India first. The World Cup is scheduled after the IPL. Every single aspect of his workload will be managed from a precautionary POV keeping his Team India objectives in mind," TOI quoted a source as saying.

Rohit wasn't a part of Mumbai's previous outing against Chennai but is expected to feature against Kolkata Knight Riders. But, he is likely to take more breaks in the next years whenever an opportunity arises.

The report further adds that Rohit is keeping his Team India aspirations above everything else at the moment, especially considering he is the favourite to take over the T20I captaincy from Virat Kohli after the conclusion of this year's World Cup.

With the upcoming 24 months arguably being the most crucial in Rohit's career, maintaining physcial and mental health is of huge importance to the 34-year-old.
