Sunil Narine

Look out for this guy!

He will be making his debut for West Indies vs India in the upcoming series..

He is a "mystery spinner" in the Ajantha Mendis Mode..

He has a conventional offspinner, a legspinner a doosra and a "knuckle ball"

For those of you who saw him recently in the CL t20 championship.. He ended up being the leading wicket taker with the lowest economy rate..

He's Very hard to read..

Look out India!

Hear hear, international cricket needs a great West Indies side again, very talented nation that just lacks the temperament and the stability to sustain itself. With a competent board, strong team discipline then that raw talent can be nurtured properly and they can become a force again.

Sunil Narine's subtle variations proved too much for Chennai Super Kings

Nitin Sundar at the MA Chidambaram Stadium

After coming unstuck in the dying moments twice in two games, Trinidad & Tobago produced a bowling performance of almost indescribable variety to keep their Champions League campaign afloat. Leading the gang of spinning assortments today was Sunil Narine, modestly classified as a purveyor of right-arm offbreaks by ESPNcricinfo. Anyone who saw Narine operate against Chennai Super Kings would consider that an outrageous understatement.

For a mystery spinner, Narine's bowling action is daringly open. He holds the ball high over his head in his right hand as he gets into delivery stride, giving the batsman a good view of his grip. The deception begins right there: there's little in his grip to suggest what he is doing with the ball. His finger positioning variations are so subtle, and his release so quick, that the TV commentators could only guess what he was up to, even after watching slow-motion replays. The home batsmen fared much worse, on a pitch so dead that it began to haunt them.

Under the conditions, T&T's score of 123 was competitive, and Narine sensed his kill straight away. M Vijay's propensity to swing across the line compulsively made him easy prey, and Narine needed only three flat offbreaks on the stumps to get past him.

Suresh Raina then succumbed to a more evolved three-card trick. The first one was the sliding offbreak, which Raina played inside the line of. In his next over, Narine produced his mystery delivery - a cross between the Mendis-Ashwin carom ball and the orthodox legbreak. Delivered with a loose wrist, the ball was released with a corkscrew twist of two fingers that made it grip, turn into the left-hander and bounce disconcertingly. Raina lunged forward and drove loosely to get an inside edge. He was had the next ball, playing early to a tossed up delivery outside off, clearly concerned that he hadn't picked which way it was going to turn.

Narine then squared up S Badrinath with the legbreak, and nearly had him lbw with an offbreak before training his guns on MS Dhoni. The man who tamed Muttiah Muralitharan with consummate authority in the World Cup final was reduced to meek pokes and dabs from the crease. Dhoni stabbed unconvincingly at a couple of the mystery legbreaks, before scooping a full delivery right back to Narine and end his agonising stay. Narine finished with figures of 4-0-8-3 - his victims being CSK's three best Indian batsmen - exceptional work, even on a sluggish track.

"I call it [the variation] the knuckle ball," Narine revealed later. "In Trinidad we play wind-ball [tennis ball] cricket, and you look to spin that ball. I decided to do it in practice one day and it wasn't working out that well. But I kept practising and it came out as a good ball."

Narine's nonchalant explanation was par for the course, since unconventional variations are a way of life in this T&T attack. Samuel Badree once again rolled out four overs of unhittable googlies and straighter ones to finish with an economy rate of 3.50; Kevon Cooper backed up his batting heroics with a series of offcutters and backspinners that kept catching Dhoni and co by surprise; Ravi Rampaul had an ordinary day, but made the most important incision when he got Mike Hussey edging, and Sherwin Ganga managed to keep the in-form Dwayne Bravo quiet enough.

Hussey said the variable bounce on the track undid CSK's chase, and revealed that Narine's action remained indecipherable. "A few of our batsmen found it difficult to read which way he was turning the ball," Hussey said. "Sometimes it is difficult if you haven't seen much of a bowler before, especially in T20 where you need to keep the run-rate going.

"If we play against him more we'll get used to his action and which way he's turning the ball a lot more. Much like Ajantha Mendis when he first came on, he was very difficult to read. But then after a while, batsmen start to read him a bit better."

Given the factory line of spinning talent T&T has produced in recent years, though, Hussey and his mates might be faced with a new set of mystery-men the next time they run into them.

Sunil Narine

ESPNcricinfo classifies Narine as a right-arm offbreak bowler, but that says less than half the story. Narine spent his formative years playing wind-ball (tennis ball) cricket in Trinidad, picking up a raft of unique variations. His most confounding trick is the "knuckle ball", a variation delivered with a loose wrist, and a corkscrew twist of two fingers that makes it grip, turn away from the right hander, and bounce alarmingly. Narine's mixed bag helped him grab 3 for 8 in four overs of unplayable spin during the Champions League game against Chennai Super Kings. The victims included two of the most punishing players of spin in the Indian side - MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. The latter will be warning his team-mates to watch Narine's fingers closely when he trots in for a bowl. If they don't, Devendra Bishoo may not be the top spinner in the West Indies side by the end of the series.

Looks good so far.

Next challenge for him is to play on some harder pitches & see if he can still turn it.

Also see if he gets a chance in the tests some time & can dismiss batsmen not forced to attack him like in ODI's.

He has been taking bagfuls in first class cricket but WI domestic is not a high standard.

If only the West Indies had better batsmen. The likes of Bishoo, Narine , Roach and Taylor are a genuine threat. It's a pity.

Given long run to likes of Kirk Edwards, Bravo and DJ bravo in future, I am sure their batting will improve as well.

Then there is likes of Russel and KP, with proper guidance they can be top all-rounder.

And yes, Way to go Narine.

For their batting Barath has potential, as does DM Bravo. Kirk Edwards has made a solid start to his career, he doesn't look quality at the crease but he has the runs on the board so far. Braithwaitte I am not sure on. Oz will be his big test.

I do not believe DJ Bravo will ever average over 30 with the bat in tests or under 40 with the ball (over career, not 1 series). ODI/T20 only for him.

They actually have 2 other very promising quicks in domestic- Kevin MCClean (tall, express) & Jason Holder (Morne Morkel height, fast medium) but few batters.

Looks pretty handy bowler, but so was mendis until he got more and more exposure and then became easier to combat and handle!

good bowler, but it will be a challenge to play even in subc. because these regions arent as spin friendly as they once where

If he performs well in other places, then ill say that he is a great player

future talent

Most likely won't play in many more IPL games, he should go and play test cricket for his country.

looks like a good prospect west indies getting some very good spinners in , now they need to find some fast bowling talent

WI have Edwards, Roach, Rampaul, Jerome Taylors - all are 90 mph bowlers. They just need to put their heads right and they can become one of the best pace attacks of this generation.

Edwards and Roach have good pace and are excellent when they get it right; shame they tend to spray the new ball around a little too much, hence their somewhat ordinary averages (though Roach still isn't too bad). Statistically in terms of pure runs per wicket, DJG Sammy is our best bowler, in spite of his relatively slow strike rate.

Would be nice to find either a promising new-ball express bowler or indeed another high-quality medium pacer in the McGrath/Asif mould.

Rampaul tends to be closer to 80 mph than 90s but he is very good with the hard nut. If he improves his skills at reversing the ball and/or improves his batting (he can certainly bat a bit) he could be a total monster IMO.

I don't know if J Taylor still has the drive and flair for Test cricket in him; his magic spell at Sabina Park '09 (ENG 51 all out, WI won by an inns & 23, played the remaining Tests on dead roads - REALLY dead roads - and took the series 1-0) was special and something to live off but he still needs full commitment in order to make a comeback.

West Indies have a quite a number of fast bowlers who can bowl over 90mph

Edwards
Roach
Taylor
Best
Cotterell
Gabriel
Rampaul at times....

On another note, Narine had an excellent game

4 overs 21 runs 1 wicket

Had Owais shah and co clueless in the 19th over of the game

Narine is an excellent prospect and troubled the Aussies on a consistent basis. I remember Holder from the under 19 world cup in 2010 and he looked an exciting prospect who will play for the west indies. The future is very bright for the windies as they have lots of youngsters who are performing who are behind their recent revival.

Watching him bowl today, I think he'll get picked easily.

Its quite obvious which way the ball will turn judging from the line he bowls. Anyhow might be a good prospect for WI.

Also noticed he isn't a big spinner and I'm assuming the pitches he is playing are so will be interesting to see what he will be like on a flat pitch as if the bowl hardly turns than he will get clobbered however if the pitch is assisting he seems more than a handful.
