Two United Nations peacekeepers from Pakistan have been sentenced to a year in prison and sacked from the army for raping a 14-year-old boy in Haiti. The soldiers were found guilty by a Pakistani military tribunal in Haiti and will serve their terms back home. The attack in Gonaives in January was not the first time UN peacekeepers have been accused of assault. Last year, five Uruguayan soldiers were accused of sexually assaulting a teenage boy at a UN base. In that case a video which purported to show the attack was posted on the internet, leading to protests in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, and calls for the UN to leave the country. There have also been demands that UN soldiers should be stripped of their immunity and be tried by Haitian courts. Monday's ruling was the first time that UN personnel have been tried and sentenced while still in the country. Haitian Justice Minister Michel Brunache said the verdict was a small step in the right direction but that "we expected more from the UN and the Pakistani government". The UN peacekeeping mission has been deployed in Haiti since 2004. Its reputation was particularly damaged by a cholera epidemic in 2010, which is thought to have been caused by sewage from a camp housing peacekeepers from Nepal.

United Nations (CNN) -- Three Pakistani police officers were found guilty of sexual exploitation and abuse of a 14-year-old Haitian boy while they were serving in a U.N. police mission in Haiti, a U.N. spokesman told reporters Tuesday.

The three were found guilty in a court-martial proceeding conducted by Pakistani authorities in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, said the spokesman, Martin Nesirky.

Pakistani authorities alerted Haitian officials to the outcome of the military procedure this month, saying that "the guilty parties will be punished, including dishonorable discharge from service, loss of benefits and imprisonment, with the latter sentence to be served immediately on return to Pakistan." Each is to serve a year in jail.

The three were in a Pakistani-formed police unit serving in Gonaives, Haiti, as part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti in the wake of the devastating earthquake there in January 2010. The attack happened this January.

The three officers have been sent back to Pakistan. The U.N. spokesman said the international body is in contact with Pakistani authorities to "examine the formal details of the procedures and to ensure appropriate follow-up."

Asked by a reporter if the one-year sentence was appropriate for the crime, Nesirky responded, "The United Nations will not comment on the terms of the punishment under the member-states, the judicial procedure. That's obviously a matter between Pakistan and Haiti, but as we stated from the outset, the United Nations considers this to be a case of the most serious sexual exploitation and abuse."

In a separate case, five Uruguayan marines were accused last year of sexually assaulting a teenager at a U.N. base after a video was posted on the Internet. That case is still under investigation.

Just punish the soldiers and leave it at that..

Really shameful....some people think, if they are wearing uniform they are over and above civilians. Things become more complicated when people perform such acts while on duty in other country. Now what....should they be tried under Haiti law or Pakistani law?? Ideally, if my wish goes, they should be tried at both places !!

I would go for death penalty tbh but that won't happen so a long jail sentence is the most suitable punishment. In Haiti though not Pakistan.

Pakistan soldiers are Muslims and British and US soldiers are not. Do you see the difference now ?
