Alternatives to penalty shoot-outs

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18205513

Quote:
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs.

Beckenbauer is head of the Football Task Force 2014, a group designed to recommend rule changes.

"Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said.

"Football should not go to one to one. When it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence."
I'd go for tic tac toe and a crossbar challenge.

How come Blatter calls penalty shoot-outs a tragedy now? Why didn't he have anything to say during the previous shoot-outs we have had?

Maybe we can go back to the coin toss?

I read a decent suggestion elsewhere. After 90 mins, you do golden goal BUT also every 5 mins each team has to remove a player from their side (let the team decide who that is) and just play until a goal happens

i thought something similar, if one team has the lead after the end of the first half of extra time that team wins, however if not, in the second half of extra time remove three players.

im pretty sure 6v6 15 minutes wd get results.

^ These two ideas aren't bad. At the end of the day, the aim is to make the decider in a format as close as possible to the 90/120 minutes that have been played prior to it. For example in cricket, the bowl-out was a big failure and in a way even worse than the football shootout because the skills required in it had no relevance to those in the match. The super over is the best possible decider as it's just a 'shorter' match. At least in football, penalties are part of the match. But they completely take out the elements of defence, attack and open play. So in this way I like the two ideas above.

The problem is, football is not a sport where a change in such a historic rule is conceivable.

Penalties are here to stay, but there's certainly an argument for the return of the golden goal, which would reduce the frequency of shootouts.

It should be Golden Goal in the extra time and penalties if there is no result.

how about a golden goal with no break after 15 minutes of extra time, so extra fitness also has an influence on the final result.

I love the shoot-outs but then when teams who played rubbish throughout the game win it, i think its unfair like what has happened to BM.

How about they just use golden goal and keep playing till someone scores. It will be a battle of fitness.

They should try out the golden goal rule in the finals of major competitions. The games might get dragged on for an extra half-hour but I wouldn't mind seeing United vs Madrid for 3 hours.

goalie???

would be super tactical, cool idea.

imagine being the last person standing, it would be the most rubbish two guys trying to put the ball in the net and constantly blasting into the crowd from close range.

Nah bro goalie would be unsubstituable.

You could play crazy mind games too, imagine if you are playing barca and decide not to make them take messi off lol their whole team would get confused.

The old american leagues had the bestest idea. Basically the NHL style shootout, all the drama of penalties but with more skill and actual football ability involved for both the pen taker and the goalie. Better than penalties in every way:

Take away offside rule and remove 1 player each every 5 min. It may reduce Red card offenses too.
