Also quite nervous about the Ben Arfa situation, he had a very bad injury and I hope he fully recovers from it. There has worryingly been a lack of information from the club about the injury and also a lot of twitter rumours suggesting he won't be the same again - fingers crossed it is all nonsense and we get to see the best of him next season as he will be vital

It'll take Ben Arfa a while to fully recover from the mental scar of the broken leg imo.

Also apparently we've signed Yohan Cabeye from Lille for about £5m.

Yeah plus Pardew recently said that rumours he has long term problems were nonsense and that he should be back for the start of July - he claimed he only mentioned him playing the last few games to keep Ben Arfa's spirit up

Cabaye sounds like it has been verbally agreed BUT don't want to get too excited yet cos nothing has been signed - he is currently on International duty so we will have to wait about 10 days before he signs, worried some other team might try to hijack the move

There's several advantages of Ben Arfa avoiding what poor Eduardo went through, which costed him his Arsenal career.

First of all, the timing of Ben Arfa's full recovery from th einjury is more then perfect, because techniqally he recovered when the season was towards the end and now he has the whole pre-season to prepare himself, especially in terms of fitness.

Also he is fairly young and has the time on his side. Youngsters who suffer serious injury tend to recover quickly physically and mentally then players that are regarded as seniors. Ramsey could be used as a prime example, he hasn't suffered any niggling injuries like Eduardo did and started to be the same player he was before his injury which Eduardo failed to show. I think the loan spell for Ramsey benefited him too but then again... The pre-season matches could be considered as a loan spell for Ben Arfa so it's the same really.

I think Ben Arfa will be fine, and he has alot to show next season... Cannot simply wait to see him in action, exciting young player.

Newcastle sign Lille midfielder Yohan Cabaye

from http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13734703.stm

Quote:
Newcastle have made Lille's Yohan Cabaye their first signing of the summer, after agreeing a five-year deal for the midfielder.

The 25-year-old helped the French side to a league and cup double last season, but told his team-mates before their final game of the season that he was bound for Tyneside.

The transfer fee is reported to be £4.3m.

"This is a fantastic move for me," Cabaye said.

"I have enjoyed great times with Lille but the time is right now to test myself against the best and playing for Newcastle United in the Premier League does just that.

"My first impressions of the club and the city are that it is a lovely place and the stadium is magnificent."

Cabaye's good form with Lille earned him a France debut against Norway in August.

I am happy enough with that - Haven't seen him play myself BUT heard plenty of good things about him. Also reading Lille forums they are gutted that he has left and that too for what they regard as far less than what he is worth

Might get away with the 1 forward if we plan on playing a 4-3-3

I hope we can get N'Zogbia

How on earth have Newcastle managed to sign Cabaye? The player needs to get his head checked if he thinks playing at a mediocre club like this can further his career. MASSIVE step downwards! He might as well have stayed at Lille where he just won the league and where he`s getting CL footy. He can do A LOT better than Newcastle because I can`t seem them getting European football for atleast 10 years.

My only guess is that he really wanted to leave France for England and Newcastle were the only team with concrete interest, OR he`s after massive wages and Newcastle were the only team willing to meet his demands.

Damn, not sure why BUT this signing seems to have hurt you

In any case he is reported to be earning £30,000 per week which is not that excessive

I would not class us as a mediocre club, I mean mediocre clubs don't get 50,000 attendances

GA, you are far too much being diplomatic. Newcastle can pull any 'professional' player, because we are historically one of the big clubs and have a strong fan base, who haven't won anything of significance for 42 years since the stadium upgrade.

We are ripe for a takeover and then champs league footy sooner than you think...unfortunately maybe not under the current regime.

On a side note, Looks like we may have got Demba Ba on a free...hopefully he will be worth it...looks like good business! Hopefully he passes or doesn't need a medical lol

I though diplomacy would be the best approach

Ba on a free would be a good bit of business, would leave the money for another striker, a winger and maybe a RB

I believe Sturridge was one player you would have liked Newcastle to target HOWEVER that seems unlikely considering Chelsea want a fee of £20Million.

Regarding the right back issue, I think Kyle Walker would be a great capture for Newcastle, he's dominant in terms of defending and also has the ability to attack but what impresses me the most is his stamina and the late engine he seems to show towards the end of the game, fairly athletic too - he impressed me today but not sure whether Spurs are willing to sell him.

I would love it if we signed Sturridge BUT we simply don't have that much money to spend on him

I can't blame Chelsea for that valuation when you consider Henderson has went for £20million and Carroll went for £35million

Kyle Walker is much better than Danny Simpson BUT doubt Spurs would let him go - also the club think Simpson is competent so no need to spend on a right back when we can concentrate on other areas

I will always appreciate the goals Nolan scored for us, especially against the Mackems BUT I am not that bothered about it if the alternative was to give him a lengthy contract

His fitness is poor, he fails to control many basic passes, doesn't have much in terms of passing, are we really going to miss him that much? I doubt it

True BUT if we do it right then our strikers should be getting the goals that Nolan has got

Yes he had a knack of being in good scoring positions BUT he often neglected his midfield duties because his fitness is poor and his technique is not of a decent standard

I think overall our team can improve without him in the side BUT it is imperative we buy a couple of strikers and a winger

So Nolan transfer to West Ham has been confirmed on a 5 year contract

He is reportedly getting £50,000 per week - not surprised we sold him, there is no way we could justify matching that

Seriously?

West Ham are paying that much to someone in Championship? They'll be in trouble if they can't come up for some reason.

They are playing a risky game - fail to get promoted at the first time of asking and they are left with players on big contracts

They even reportedly offered Ba upwards of £50,000 to stay BUT he rejected that

Seems like that deal should be completed tomorrow along with that Neil Taylor from Swansea.

Happy with the Ba signing, no fee involved so less risk involved - a lot has been said about his dodgy knee BUT he seems to have played a reasonable amount of games the last few years.

Aside from him we will need another striker and a winger - any other positions will be dependant on whether Barton/Enrique stay

Newcastle sign Demba Ba

from http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13792378.stm

Quote:
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Senegal striker Demba Ba from West Ham.

The 26-year-old, who scored seven goals in 13 outings for the Hammers in the second half of the 2010-11 campaign, has joined on a three-year deal.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said: "Demba made a great impression at West Ham last season and is a great signing for the club.

"He has pace, excellent technical ability, is good in the air."

Pardew had made his intention to sign a striker clear this summer in his bid to fill the void left following Andy Carroll's £35m move to Liverpool in January.

The Magpies boss added: "And, it goes without saying, [Demba] has the ability to consistently find the back of the net.

"Moreover he has a great passion to play for Newcastle United."

The Senegal striker's arrival also provides Pardew with his second signing of the summer following the capture of France international midfielder Yohan Cabaye earlier this month.

"Everything has been sorted out and now I'm happy because I can start to focus on playing and scoring goals for Newcastle," Ba stated.

"This is a great club and a very good team so to sign here was an easy choice to make.

"I have spoken to [winger] Hatem [Ben Arfa] about the club and he told me how happy he is here and how big Newcastle are so I'm really happy and I can't wait to start playing.

"I know a lot of famous strikers have played here before and I will do my best to win games for the club."

That is a lie actually - his move to Liverpool fell through due to contractual reasons

In any case on paper this is a good signing - we are slowly building a decent team/squad. Now we need another striker and a winger at the very least

Newcastle United can today confirm the signing of teenage midfielder Mehdi Abeid on a five-year deal.

The 18-year-old arrives from French club Lens, having completed a successful trial at St. James' Park last season

"He is a bright, young talent and we think he has an exciting future ahead of him.

"After an impressive trial with us earlier in the year, I'm looking forward to working with Mehdi and developing his talent."

Fabricio Coloccini has been named the new club captain at Newcastle United, taking over from Kevin Nolan.

The Magpies armband came up for grabs this summer when Nolan opted to make a move to Championship outfit West Ham United.

Manager Alan Pardew has taken his time to weigh up his options, with it important to find the right man for the job.

He has decided that Argentine defender Coloccini fits the bill and he will skipper the side from next season.

Following his appointment, Coloccini told the club's official website: "I am thrilled to be named captain of Newcastle United. It is one of the proudest moments of my career.

"Leading the team out in front of our supporters in our first game against Arsenal will be a great honour for me and I aim to give my best for the team and the supporters throughout the season.

"I would also like to thank Alan Pardew for putting his faith in me. It means so much to me."

How did he perform last season because I just remember his first season where he looked terrible, didn't really hear his name mentioned much so i'm assuming he had a much better season in comparison to his first in the premiership.

He was brilliant last season and the season before, had a nightmare first season BUT that was a disastrous season from top to bottom

I think going to the Championship did him the world of good, his game came on so much and is the reason why I think he did well last season. He still had a few problems against the really physical strikers BUT overall he more than held his own - he is a very clever defender, reads the game well and is very comfortable on the ball

I am happy he has been given the captaincy - he was the best option, I just hope we can tie him down to a longer contract

Nile Ranger deal makes no sense. Was reading on soccernet they were looking to offload him with recent additions to their strike force and that he was a surplus. For crying out loud, the kid is 18. A surplus already? I am baffled. I liked what I saw of him.
