Manchester United has been linked up with 4 names.

Andy Carroll [Newcastle Utd] Sorry GA your team isn't that known.
Karim Benzema [Real Madrid]
Fabio Coentrao [Benfica]
Manuel Nauer [Schalke]

Let's see what happens. Might get a few of these guys in the summer instead of now.

I JUST HAD TO QUOTE YOU, so you couldn't get out of this one.

Geordie will have a field day with you. Anyways, most of thost targets are rubbish. We already have three strikers and I don't see where Carroll would fit. Furthermore, we got Macheda, Welbeck who need to continue to develop.

Benzema does nto want to come to England. AC Milan or Juve will probs snap him up before we do. Coentrao, we don't need. We have Evra and then Fabio who has put in some good shifts and just needs to stay injury free. Neuer is the only real option.

I will be surprised if Fergie makes a major signing.Defense and attack are fine but we will be a winger light with park going to Asia cup and valencia still injured.

Nicely spotted by mistake.

Just stating the rumours. I agree with your opinions on the players.

Benzema would be interesting if he wanted to play in England.

Also had murmurs of Tevez coming back to United.

Schalke are the b!tches of German football, excuse my language but thats exactly what they are.

This is in large part to their whiny moaner of a coach Felix Magath who has a persoal vendetta against Bayern ever since we relieved him of his duties at Bayern.

Inter Milan are looking to replace Rafa Benitez with Jose Mourinho.

Edit: In response Mourinho has stated that he is happy at Madrid and will stay there many years. But he can't say that he won't return to Inter. At the same time he can't say that he won't go to another team. Though "Inter would always be in front".

Dutch international Ibrahim Afellay will have a medical in Barcelona tomorrow and will complete his transfer from PSV Eindhoven to FC Barcelona on Friday.

Great signing if this happens.

Edit: Actually this is a done deal, so it will happen.

I highly doubt we (Manchester United) will see any activity this January. Mourinho has given Benzema more of a role of late and Benzema himself wants to stay at Madrid. Fabio Coentrao and Leighton Baines have also been linked, but that in itself is based on the stories that Evra wants to leave this summer (which I don't believe is the case).

Carroll is a possibility in the summer- Fergie likes him a lot and made enquiries last season. SAF always likes to have 4 quality strikers to choose from, and with Owen's permanent injured status, Carroll could well be a good option. He is young, powerful and will get at least 15 goals a season.

This is going to be a very nervous January for us - next to no chance of us signing anyone (well decent at least) BUT concerned our players will be sold

Carroll is the main worry obviously - It is Ashley I dont trust, Carroll loves it here and will no doubt stay as long as the club keep him BUT I am worried Ashley will try to cash in

How so? If he is going to Bayern without their permission, clearly Bayern tapped him up. I am sure you would be crying foul if an English club did the same.

I really cannot see Fergie bringing in a striker. With Berba having his best season so far we also have Rooney and Hernandez. Owen will most likely be gone in the summer but with Welbeck exceeding expectations at Sunderland and Diouf se to come back from Blackburn and also Macheda I think we're well stocked in that area.

Not to forget the good young talent in the reserves such as Keane and King (not ready for the first team of course but very good prospects).

The final word is almost always given to money.

Having said that - I don't see Carroll leaving. Not really sure why Pardew would want to see him go, anyway. He's a vital cog for Newcastle United.

Carroll won't be motivated by money at this stage of his career - wearing the number 9 shirt means a lot, something money and even trophies might not be able to compete with

There is no doubt that pardew would want him to stay, selling him would weaken our side - the only issue is whether ashley cashes in, though it would be stupid to do so since it would be next to impossible to replace him (taking all things into account)

We're not short of striking options for the future I agree. However I think Carroll is that good a prospect that any top club would take him if they had the chance. And as he has shown, he has the ability to start performing in the Premier League and banging in the goals straight away.

I don't think Owen will be around much longer, and I still think Macheda and Welbeck are a couple of seasons away from being able to command a place in the starting eleven.

However, this is all conjecture of course- as GA says I get the impression Carroll is happy at Newcastle. So he would only move in the foreseeable future if the club wanted to sell him. And Mike Ashley couldn't be that stupid......or could he?

As far as Bayern are concerned we are linked with the following players:

Leighton Baines (Everton)
Glen Johnson (Liverpool)
Manuel Neuer (Schalke)
Luiz Gustavo (Hoffenheim)
Taiwo (Marseille)

Baines has already said that he wants to stay at Everton and doesnt want to move to either Man U or Bayern. If he were to move i think he would choose MU over us so that he can stay in England. I don't see the Glen Johnson deal happening. I don't see the Neuer deal happening either due to the tapping up issue. Not sure about Gustavo since theres a lot of conflicting reports there. Taye Taiwo who is a nigerian international left back, played ell at the world cup and was voted Africa's best left back by the CAF, might be a good prospect, however tying up this deal won't be easy either.

So in short...a lot of talk and rumours...not much happening in terms of substance though.

As an Arsenal fan.........i dont mind if it goes through.

RVP is amazingly gifted, but i am fearing that his talent will go wasted due to his injuries. With that kinda money, Wenger could buy 3 Chamakhs!!

Completely agree on the Carroll probably not going point, unless Ashley wants to cash in I can't see him willingly wanting to go especially at this stage in his career.

On the Carroll to United point I completely agree that Welbeck and Macheda require more time but I just think Sir Alex would rather see them develop and give them a few games here and there whilst Berba and Rooney lead the line rather than go out and spend a fair amount on Carroll.

I agree that is what is most likely at this point, as well as Hernandez being given a fair amount of games too. The only thing is though I still feel there is a question mark over Berbatov. Don't get me wrong I am not one of those people who say he should run around like a headless chicken- I am perfectly fine with his playing style.

However it's his goal output I am concerned about. Again, I know he is currently on 11 goals for this season (I think) which looks great on paper but I'm concerned that number one 8 of those goals came in the space of 2 games, and number two he hasn't managed to score in the Champions League.

I think the problem with him is lack of consistency- he started the season on fire, then tailed off for a quite a few games until he burst into life against Blackburn again. But since then he has gone off the boil again- in particular against Valencia at home in the Champions League he had several great one on one situations and didn't look like scoring at all.

If you add to this the rumours around that his contract won't be renewed and several clubs will come in for him in the summer I am unsure whether he is a long-term prospect for us (he is nearing 30 too). So if the plan is to sell him this summer then I think Carroll would be a perfect replacement. However, lets wait and see till the end of the season- I think we're all hoping that Berbatov and Rooney can string a few matches together and become a bit more consistent as a strike partnership.

Sky sources believe a fee of £27m has been agreed between man city and wolfsburg for Dzeko.

Looks like Tevez or balloteli might just leave, this deal is senseless otherwise.

Reports suggest we are trying to sign Ben Arfa on a permanent basis - I really hope that is true, he showed in the brief period he played for us (before that thug injured him) that he has that extra bit of quality that we need

The only question mark is whether he will be the same BUT all the medics/physios reckon his recovery is going well and it wont be an issue

We also have Dan Gosling coming back from injury so it will be like 2 new signings if we can get Ben Arfa signed - though reportedly Liverpool are trying to hijack the deal

Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson rules out January buys

Quote:
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not buy any new players in the January transfer window.

When asked about possible purchases the 69-year-old Scot stated there would "definitely not" be any new arrivals.

But Ferguson hopes to loan out Federico Macheda for the rest of the season to increase the striker's experience.

The 19-year-old Italian, who has made seven appearances in the Premier League this season, has been linked with former club Lazio, Roma and Bolton.

Ferguson confirmed that Macheda's fellow forwards, Danny Welbeck and Mame Biram Diouf, will remain on loan at Sunderland and Blackburn respectively.

Welbeck has enjoyed success on Wearside and Ferguson is hopeful Macheda could have a similarly productive time away from Old Trafford.

England Under-21 international Welbeck has made 18 league appearances for Sunderland, scoring five goals, despite being in competition with expensive recruits Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan for a place in the Black Cats' strike force.

"I had a chat with Federico and explained the Welbeck situation," said Ferguson.

"It can pan out exactly the same for him. It would be the same thing, going to a club, getting that experience for six months and coming back to us a better player."

Macheda made an immediate impact on his Red Devils debut with a superb injury-time winner against Aston Villa in April 2009 and a four-year deal followed in December to extend his stay at Old Trafford until June 2014.

However, the success of summer signing Javier Hernandez and the return to fitness of Michael Owen look set to limit Macheda's chances up front for Manchester United.

Ferguson has concentrated his spending on the summer break in recent years and did not sign any players in January 2010.

He did sign two players in the January window the year before but Serbian winger Zoran Tosic left for CSKA Moscow in June after five first-team appearances while Belgian defender Richie de Laet only returned from a loan spell with Preston on Thursday.

De Laet and forward Joshua King's loans at Deepdale were due to expire after the match against Crystal Palace on 3 January, but they have returned to Old Trafford early in the wake of Ferguson's son, Darren, being sacked as Preston manager.

United agreed a deal for Danish goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard with Aalesund in November and the 26-year-old will be available for selection from January.

Ferguson conceded that he may have to reinforce his squad by recalling midfielder Tom Cleverley from his loan spell with Wigan.

Cleverley has been away from Old Trafford for almost two years, impressing on loan spells at Leicester and Watford before taking up the option of a temporary spell at the DW Stadium.

"Tom has done excellently as well but the agreement with him was always that we would review it in January," said Ferguson.

"I have a fantastic relationship with Wigan so I have not discussed it any further than that.

"The only problem is that we have lost Park Ji-sung to the Asia Cup for the whole of January and I don't have Antonio Valencia back until the end of February, so we are a bit light in that respect in terms of wide positions."

Ferguson expects Paul Scholes to return to training next week in a further boost to his midfield options.

The 35-year-old has not played since injuring his groin in the Champions League win over Rangers on 24 November.

Makes no difference really since Crouch is a poor man's Carroll

Only player that would be acceptable would be Bale/Modric BUT arry would never do that and rightly so

No point us getting a bunch of average players to let Carroll go - it would only weaken our side and vastly increase our wages

I agree.

Andy Carroll is a 21 year old potential star player.

Would certainly take something extravagant to woo Newcastle. Don't see it happening.

This story is a few days old now but FC Bayern have signed Brazilian defender Luis Gustavo for......wait for it.....20 million euros.

I really dont know about this, yes we did need a defender, and he is a good prospect in some eyes, but he's relatively unknown and to then go and pay 20 million for him...im not too happy with this. It shows we do have a lot of money to spend come the summer transfer window but I really think this money could have been better spent elsewhere.

Ah well lets see what happens.

we're only allowed one non-EU from outside Italian leagues per season.

that's why we had to choose between Dzeko and Krasic last summer

Its not non-Italian, its non-EU. To prevent any EU citizen from working in Italy would be illegal and would land the club/league in very hot water indeed.

Thats a bit of a silly rule imo, whether theyre EU or Non EU theyre still non italian!

I suspect Serie A made this rule to help local italians but because of the Pan EU work rules they cannot restrict it to just italians. So whats the point of the rule?

The rule was made after the recent disastrous World Cup. They thought how can Italy have such a poor World Cup and yet their Champions just won the CL. Then you look at the composition of the Inter team and I don't think they had one Italian in their starting line-up for the final.

As SheharyarK said above, they can't ban all non-Italians as that is illegal. So they went for the best legal solution, cause at least stopping Non-EU players will slow down the inflow of young Brazilians and Argentinians coming to overseas (as it is a popular route for many Italian teams) and their thinking is this will give more chances to younger Italian talent.

We are being linked with a move for Seb Larsson - he is out of contract in June so a fee of £1.5 Mill has been reported

I would certainly be happy with that - he is a canny player and he seems like a canny enough guy. Would prefer to get him than sign David Bentley who would cost more, be on a higher wage and have a big ego
