Darren Sammy - Is he a Batsman or a Bowler?

WICB made Darren Sammy the team captain.The player cant hold a place regularly in the ODI side let alone the test side.He has taken the place of a regular bowler.For the 1st time in years the WI look like a good bowling side.With Bishoo doing well in his debut series.Rampaul is bowling extremely good.Roach is good as well.Now you add either Edwards(who is in the squad) or Taylor(playing IPL and bowling well,with a lot of pace) and you have a solid attack.But that wont be the case as Darren Sammy has to play.

The only reason WI board made him the captain is because Sammy knows he wont be in the team if he is not the captain so he will toe the line of the board.

Pathetic stuff from WICB spoiling what can be a good team.In my opinion they should have made Sarwan or Chanderpaul the captain.

And Sarwan and Chaderpaul are tried and tested failures as captains. Edwards and Taylor didnt even sign a central contract, so there really was no one else besides Sammy.

3.Not signing contract doesnt mean you cannot be chosen.Edwards is in the squad by the way.

Taylor wasnt selected and for the Nth time Edwards is fit and is in the squad.

Couldn't agree more wih OP! Sammy is the weakest link in this WI lineup and hes occupying the space of their 3rd pacer. If Taylor or Edwards come for him and if they can replace their opener SMITH with a half decent opener, they can become a very decent side!

Im a firm beleiver the captain should lead from the front thats what Sammy has done today, he has passion and it seem to matter to him this on the face of it didn't seem to be the case with recent West Indies captains so fair play so Mr Sammy. Although his critics may claim that a Pakistani team of lulloo batsman just made him look good (and I would agree to a certain extent).

i had written it on cricinfo. i also believe he is a better test bowler than odi bowler. the guy has a seven-fer in tests in england. that too on debut. dummies dont get seven-fers.
i had also written that he is like mike brearley, a better captain than a player. his team may not win much but his attitude is better than gayle.

The wicket was extremely under-prepared, almost all his wickets came from the same ball, staying down and jagging back.

I think it would have been better for WI to boot Sammy out and get a fresh captain in.
The potential team they could have would be;

Gayle, Simmonds, Bravo, Chanderpaul, Sarwan, Samuels, Roach, Rampaul, Fidel, Taylor, Bishoo.

I don't think Sammy is a great cricketer, at international level at least. But yet again, in this age of the over hyped who fail to live up to their potential once they've been blinded by the bright lights of fame and adulation, it's a player who gets by almost on grit and heart alone who steps up when needed most. These are the unsung heroes of the game my friends. Players like Sammy play the game for all the right reasons. And that should be celebrated. I think his reign as captain may well be brief and results unspectacular, but during his tenure he should have the support of the fans.

He is a test level bowler, his first class record speaks for himself. In recent years he's been not only good, but West Indies best test bowler

I don't think he's suited so much to limited overs, but perhaps it's worth including him just so he can captain.

Certainly he is a miles better captain than Gayle.

Except with a bowling average literally - no joke- about half of Sami's in test cricket. Roughly 28, which is less than Zaheer Khan even. I'll admit Sammy looks very innocuous, but he has gotten the wickets. West Indies have a lot of other things to worry about, especially Sarwan and chanderpaul falling away with their performances in test cricket. He's not the next Glenn McGrath but Sammy is okay.

West Indies bowling line-up is actually quite decent now, with bishoo, Edwards, Roach, Rampaul, Russell and Sammy all in the squad. their batsmen need to step up, and unfortunately Chanderpaul and Sarwan seem to be faiding away just as new talent like Barath,Simmons and Darren Bravo are still finding their way.
