First Phase of PCB-PEPSI Cricket Stars Program for U-16 players will start from 10th July 2011. This will be the Second Edition of the program which is being conducted by PCB in collaboration with PEPSI International. The Program is aimed at identifying the Cricket Talent in the Pakistani Youth and would help in developing skilled cricketers at the grassroot level which can then be groomed to become super stars of the future.

The Pepsi-PCB cricket stars program will be conducted in 4 phases. In the first phase open trials will be held in 43 districts that would conclude in October 2011.

In the second phase around 35 shortlisted players would appear for final trials at respective regional headquarters for the selection of 11 Regional and 1 FATA Team and a short training camp of teams would be held under NCA designated coaches in November 2011.

In the 3rd phase Inter region U-16 tournament would be held in November / December 2011. In the 4th phase 24 top performers of the Inter region U-16 tournament, selected by the national selection committee would be organized in January / February at NCA, Lahore under NCA elite coaches.

The Trials for the first phase of this nationwide talent hunt program for young and upcoming players will be held in 43 districts of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and AJK.

Players born on or after September 1, 1995 are eligible to appear for trials. Original Form B of NADRA is required for age verification and no other document in this regard would be accepted.

In this phase Talent Hunt Officers and Regional Coaches will conduct 2 days open trials at each of the district selected for this purpose, which will be followed by the age verification process to be conducted by NCA medical panel.

Players clearing the age verification process will be shortlisted for final trials to be held at a later date at respective regional headquarters.

Fine, but did they find some talents in the first edition? any fast bowlers?

I met a 13 year old boy at the karachi gymkhana nets, really impressive left armer. He said he got chosen and the whole experience was very good and competitive. Don't know how true it was, he had a pepsi challenge whatever t-shirt though, however he was definitely 15-16 because he said he finished metric.
Anyway, you can't expect 16 year olds and under to come and become superstars all of a sudden, these programs help our U-19 and first class cricket, which will eventually help our national team. It's a long term project.

These programs are good but they miss an essential point. We are now depending on raw talent and luck to find talent in the country.

Where are the grass root level, school level coaching academies in each major city or rural areas that can deliver these players without holding such camps?

I remember about a year ago there was a nationwide search (the one where there was that nice advert with Imran and Wasim in whites).. what happened there? Was anyone actually discovered?

This is just the SECOND edition of U-16 talent hunt programme. As osee_bhai has stated above, a bunch of 16 year olds and under can't come and become superstars all of a sudden. These camps mainly help in the selection of the regional U-19 teams, which in turn helps the national U-19 team.

As for other such camps, there was one by UFONE where Sohail Khan was declared the winner. Then there was another one by PEPSI - that was a speed competition and Sohail Khan won that too. From there, someone (I think Sikander Bakht or Rashid Latif) spotted him and took him to the academy.

IIRC, Anwar Ali also came from one such talent hunt programme.
