Swann crowned world No. 1 ODI bowler

Via cricinfo.com

Graeme Swann has become the world's No. 1 one-day spinner after his eight wickets helped England to a 3-2 series win against Sri Lanka.

It is the first time he has reached the landmark in his career and he overtakes New Zealand's left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, who had held the spot since September 2009.

Swann is also ranked No. 2 in Test cricket, behind Dale Steyn, but his No. 1 ranking is the first time an England bowler has achieved that feat in any form of the game since Steve Harmison briefly rose to the top of the Test rankings in August 2004.

Will surely be at the top of the test rankings by the time the summer is done. When was the last time a spinner was at the top of both forms of the game? I would imagine it was Murali. Before Murali? Has Warne ever managed it? What about Saqlain? Or even Kumble? Or Mushtaq?

The rankings system also gives weight to the opposition. Wickets against Sri Lanka, who are ranked number 4 in odis, are given much more weight than wickets against other weaker teams.

Quote:
The ratings were developed at the suggestion of Ted Dexter in 1987. The intention was to produce a better indication of players' current standing in the sport than is provided by comparing their averages. Career averages are based on a player's entire career and do not make any allowance for match conditions or the strength of the opposition, whereas the ratings are biased towards recent form and account for match conditions and the quality of the opponent using statistical measures.

One of the few bowlers who I could sit and watch bowl all day. Always looking for wickets and most of the time picking them up too.

Big test for him in the next series and good luck to one of cricket's few entertainers, who backs up his talk with a huge amount of skill in all forms of cricket.

You really think so? I don't think the Indian batsmen would struggle against Swann, they've dominated much better. Plus there's a gap of 100 points between Steyn and Swann. Don't think he'll reach the top anytime soon unless Steyn retires from Tests now.

Congratulations Graeme Swann, the best off spinner ever for England and it's good to see England producing great cricketers in all formats. Swann can be the best off spinner ever in history if he continues his awesome form.

Yep. Agree on all counts. No way Swann would overtake Steyn for at least 6 months or so and that too if there is a massive dip in Steyn's form.

Way way OTT comments.

Neither is he Eng's best ever spinner (at least not as yet) and probably he'll never be world's best ever spinner, partly due to his age.

Congrats to Swanny. Good going.

P.S:- Just goes to show that how a good bowler is benifitted by having other mediocre bowlers in the team. Too many chances of picking up wickets on your own.

In England's case this is unfortunately true a lot of the time. However, Swann only took 15 wickets in the Ashes and the rest of the team took another 75 or so, so hopefully they can stop relying on him so much over time.

Also, Swann's catching is underrated. He's been part of many a wicket by taking difficult chances off the edge that other teams wouldn't have taken, so he helps take wickets in that regard as well. The Ponting golden duck at Adelaide is just one example of how snaffling a high-pressure chance can change the course of a game.

His record remains excellent in all formats of the game. This summer will be one of the biggest tests of his whole career. I don't know how the test bowling rankings work but if he does well, maybe he will get a lot of points for taking wickets against the number one side. Dale Steyn is a madman and a worthy number one bowler, but maybe Swann isn't as far behind in the rankings as we think.

Very fine bowler and a credit to the game.

Congrats to a top bowler for a meaningless achievement.

He was talked up as being the first offie to come to Australia and dominate and he did not. Was handy but nothing great. His real Test is against Indian batters.

ICC player rankings are utter garbage, have been for years and remain garbage to this day.

Nobody who knew anything about cricket expected Swann to dominate in Oz, it's never been done in history by a finger spinner. Most fans expected him to keep things tight, pick up the odd wicket & win the game on a 5th day turning pitch if needed.
