After 115 years together, tortoise couple splits up

Quote:
More than a century's worth of matrimony wasn't enough to keep them together.

After 115 years as an item, two tortoises at an Austrian zoo have decided to call it quits.

Trouble began recently when Bibi and Poldi started to pester one another in the cage they've shared at the Klagenfurt Austrian Zoo, where they've resided for 36 years.

The two hulking creatures grew up together and, until now, have been inseparable.

But now, the star-crossed tortoises refuse to share a cage with one another.

"We get the feeling they can't stand the sight of each other anymore," Zoo Director Helga Happ told Austrian Times.

The pair's irreconcilable differences became apparent when Bibi bit off a chunk of her partner's shell and continued to harass her former paramour until he was moved to another enclosure.

According to the Times, zoo management has tried to repair the broken romance -- even dispatching animal experts to assist with relationship counselling. But it appears that no special foods or joint activities will bring the pair back together.

Happ says it's unclear why the two have turned on each other.

Zoo staff have observed that Bibi, in particular, appears to want her own bachelorette pad.

There's been no change in the pair's routine, reports the Times. Before moving to Klagenfurt, the two lived together amicably at Basel Zoo in Switzerland.

For her part, Happ still hopes to patch things up between Bibi and Poldi.

"We were told that it's very rare that after so many years animals who are a pair will fall apart…We hope though we can bring round a reconciliation," she told Times.
115 years as a couple, now they have split up. I wonder what Poldi did to anger Bibi, that one day she decided to call it quits, bit him and attacked him until he had to be moved away. This was the world's most oldest "marriage" by the way.

Once a cute couple:

Budda Kachhua must have ogled at Kachuina Kaif and got caught.

Buddi Kachhua - What the hell man!! Am I not good enuf for you?

Budda Kachhua - Yeah Right!!!

Then Buddi went ape on Budda and the rest is history!!! 115 years of Pyar went down Indian Slum drain. They should have at least thought about their 100yr old son before taking the extreme step

These two probably have a million kids by now, and they probably don't care.

Imagine being with someone for 100+ years and someone called Bibi! Poldi probably got bored of the wrinkles and nagging.

They can live up to 200 years so the zoo should get Poldi some younger shells to look at.

Give him a new fresh one thats like 5 years old. That'll keep him going for another century until he gets bored again.

Yes, a change is like a holiday.

But he's an old geezer, probably can't get his shell up that's why Bibi was annoyed.

Astonishingly, there are giant tortoises on the Galapagos Islands who have lived long enough to have seen Charles Darwin.
