Mohammad Amir's Rehabilitation Process Begins

By Bipin Dani

Mumbai, June 17 : “Yes, Mr Amir, how can I help you?” were the first words Mr Maqbool “Max” Babri, the renowned Lahore-based psychologist and hypnotist asked suspended former Pakistani pace ace Mohd. Amir, as he (Babri) welcomed him to the first rehabilitation session today at his clinic in Lahore’s Defence area.

It may be noted here that Amir was instructed by the ICC to undergo rehabilitation & psychology sessions under a certified doctor and subsequently the PCB identified “Max” Babri as the right person to guide the suspended Pakistani pace man. Interestingly, Babri postponed his session with a Karachiite to “accommodate” Mohd Amir.

Confirming that Amir was very relaxed and co-operative during the 2 hour session from 10 am to 12 noon ( local time ),Babri said, “ Amir took the responsibility of the wrong doing (spot fixing) and didn’t blame anyone but himself for the mess he’s in right now.”

“During our long session, I only listened to what he had to say rather than questioning him on the contentious issue of spot fixing. I was impressed by his positivity and he holds no grudges against anyone anymore. He wasn’t bitter at all and in fact regretted the entire episode of spot fixing.”

Babri also revealed that in the spare time that Amir has now, he wants to teach his neighborhood youngsters that art of fast bowling and resist any type of temptations once the youngsters reach competitive level of the game.

“He will also further strengthen his academic qualification by appearing for his intermediate examinations soon”, averred Babri. It may be noted here that Amir has only studied till matriculation, passing in 1st division.

“I do not know how many sessions he will have to undergo, but if necessary, I will also ask him to undergo a hypnotism session with me to understand his mindset”, Babri further said.

Babri is unlikely to furnish any “mentally fit certificate” to either Mohd Amir or to the PCB after the conclusion of the sessions with his “celebrity” patient.

“No, I won’t be recommending any reduction in ban either to the ICC once Amir is through with my sessions”, adds Babri.

"He feels the ICC has treated him fairly and expects them to judge him favorably as he is making efforts to rehabilite himself. He is also thankful for the PCB support, which is within the limitations that surround his situation".

Amir would not comment without his lawyer's permission. His female lawyer is not in Pakistan, it is learnt here.

No video or audio recoding was made during Saturday session. The meeting was kept a secret so as to avoid media glare.

Looking forward to have him back. Even if his ban isn't reduced 3 years will move on quickly as I still remember the World T20 in 2009 as if it was yesterday allthough 3 years have passed.

As far as I am aware, a psychologist is bound by the same confidentiality ethics as a doctor.

Good to see Amir moving on and trying to focus on his education in the 5 year period. It will be time well spent and will help him shore up his life outside cricket.

It could be that Amir wanted this info to get out.

Could well be, seeing as he cant seem to walk down the street without getting some media coverage. It (to me) just looks so unprofessional from the psychologist/hypnotist.
