Match report from foxsports.com.au

Quote:
THE Kookaburras continued their relentless march towards the Olympic men's hockey semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Pakistan tonight.

Pakistan were a conspicuous step up in class from Australia's first two opponents - Canada and South Africa - and it was just the hitout Australia needed as they prepare to take on great rivals the Netherlands tomorrow.

Australia were again served well by their department of youth with Eddie Ockenden showing exceptional touch to beat three players before setting up the final goal for Travis Brooks.

Playing his 60th match for Australia despite being just 21, Ockenden has been one of Australia's Games standouts.

His form is no surprise given he was voted best player at the last two Champions Trophy tournaments.

It was Australia's third win in succession and if they can muster even a draw from their last two games against the Netherlands and Great Britain they should advance to the play-offs and be two matches away from retaining their status as Olympic champion.

Australia were one-down early after fleet-footed Shakeel Abbasi stunned the tournament favourites with a brilliant strike from an acute angle which gave him a target range of barely two metres wide - and that space included goal-keeper Stephen Lambert.

The sweet strike rocketed into Lambert and then deflected into the goal.
Australia, as they inevitably do, struck back soon after when Grant Schubert beat the advancing goal-keeper for the equaliser.

Australia took the lead early in the second half when a brilliant piece of improvisation from a penalty corner in which the ball was neatly shuffled around the square until it found Jamie Dwyer unmarked just two metres from goal.

Australia has got used to out-running opponents in the second half - and again they drew away after the break.

But the competitive Pakistanis matched them is most areas of the game on a night free of Beijing's infamous heat and humidity.

Supporting is growing behind the Australian teams as they show impressive form. Both the Kooaburras and Hockeyroos are undefeated after three games each and seemingly semi-final bound.

Two large groups of green and yellow clad fans gave rowdy support tonight as part of a near capacity crowd.

Australia have conceded just two goals in the tournament and with captain Bevan George the centrepiece of a near impenetrable wall.

Well I checked the scores after 2-3 days and it looks like Pakistan is out. So less stress for everyone now. It is between Aus-Hol-GB now in the group. suprisingly Holland is not doing that good but I read about some controversy when Holland team was selected (I don't know what) so that might explain their low scoring.

In the other group Spain and NZ are on top and Germany has to catch up

Absolutely invalid, I was shocked to see the bad referee decisions today?!
70% of the time, decisions went against Pakistan when it was their right, this seems like a proof that money is the only thing left nowadays in sports!

Actually we're not. If we trash SAF, like 6-0 or 6-1, and then beat Holland by 1, we will be thru, provided that Australia beats Holland in a low scoring game.

Because if we beat Holland and SAF, and Holland loses to Australia, that gives each of us 3 wins in the group.

That way, it comes down to how many goals scored I believe.

you are missing GB team in there and beating them was the most important game for Pakistani team. They have won two and lost one and they will probably win another one (Canada or South Africa - the one they have not played). Holland will probably lose to Australia. Holland-Pakistan match look tough even though I think this is a weak holland team. Holland beat England 1-0. So it can be a 3 way tie between Eng-Hol-Pak and Australia as the leader

I see Australia and GB or Holland going through

Yeah, this game would probably be the most anticipated throughout the group matches, some futures depend on this game; Pakistan, Great Britain and ofcourse the Netherlands. I would be watching this game for sure, via the proxy thing lol .
Anyways, I've worked out what Pakistan needs to qualify with the qualifiers which are Australia;

1) I haven't read or heard anyone talking about the Great Britain vs Canada match today, if Canada pull off a surprise victory things can get easier for the Pakistani hockey team to qualify. This is how the tables would be if Pakistan win their next two matches against South Africa 'Comprehensively', and the Netherlands;
Great Britain has too lose to Australia in order to reflect this table.

Rnk Team GP W T L PF PA CLASS PTS
1. AUS 5 5 0 0 19 2 12
2. NED 5 3 0 2 10 2 9
3. PAK 5 3 0 2 6 8 9
4. GBR 5 2 0 3 6 3 6
5. CAN 5 2 0 3 4 13 6
6. RSA 5 0 0 5 0 17 0

This leaves Pakistan and the Netherlands at equal points, Pakistan should be able to qualify if Pakistan beats South Africa by a good score, perhaps beat them by around 4-5 goals or if not then beat Netherlands by a few goals as well which looks unlikely? So it's better off we play well against South Africa today and produce chances.

2) The second way is that, Great Britain, Netherlands and Pakistan share the same amount of points, Pakistan would be able to qualify if it beats South Africa by a good amount of goals, beat Netherlands by a one or a few goals and don't concede any goals against them, and finally Great Britain not beating Canada comprehensively will secure Pakistan a rank number 2 spot to go through, which am sure we all want ;)
Tables reflecting my views/predictions;

Rnk Team GP W T L PF PA CLASS PTS
1. AUS 5 5 0 0 19 2 12
2. NED 5 3 0 2 10 2 9
3. GBR 5 3 0 2 6 3 9
4. PAK 5 3 0 2 6 8 9
5. CAN 5 1 0 4 4 13 3
6. RSA 5 0 0 5 0 17 0

InshAllah Pakistan would be able to create some success!

Great Britain is out!
Great Britain 1-1 Canada
Canada played well compared to their game against Pakistan, they've got some talent in their team, bad luck for Canada some chances missed out and GBR scored their equaliser in the last minute when the match time was finished but because of a penalty corner which occured twice at that time GBR scored..
This is good news for the Pakistani fans in my opinion..

Oh Canada you beauty!

12th Man, you are right, I had completely forgotten about GB but that concern is over.

Australia please do not let Holland score more then 1 goal. Or at least beat them by 2.

Let's beat South Africa by 5.

And beat Holland by 1.

Thanks Muddaser.

Not a hockey expert here but it seems that these boys are very skillful and if they stick with this set of players and keep politics out of hockey then we should have an excellent team by the 2010 world cup.

This is really bad.

Just 1-1 after the half.

We have to score AT LEAST 4 goals next half, and not let them score any to advance.

The difference between the goals scored and conceded.
Holland has +8
Pakistan has 0

When a team scores, + 1 to the GD
When a team concedes, -1 to the GD

So Pakistan need a 4 goal win if Holland lose by 1 to Australia. As Holland GD would be +7, while Pakistan GD would be 0. They need 4 because for every goal Pakistan scores against Holland, there is a 2 point swing (+1 for Pakistan GD, - 1 for Holland GD).

Germany-Spain has started. 20 minuted later it will be Australia-Holland

Dissapointing 3-1 win over SA. Australia beat them 10-0 so Pakistan should have atleast scored 5 goals but they just cannot finish

with Holland qualifying, they may just be a bit laid back approach from them and just maybe Pakistan can take advantage and gain victory Insh'Allah

To be honest, I have lost all hopes on Pakistan sports. This can only improve if Pakistani boards invest more and too support that the Pakistani Government needs to establish itself which is unlikely at the moment, it will take atleast 2-3 years..

Holland scores on penalty corner. they were lucky as ball went up and there were only one defender and golakeeper in the area and ball was going into the goal. No headbut tried by the defender there
2-1 to Holland - 22 min left

In any case, Pakistan has never before ended at any place below sixth at the Olympic Games level. Beijing will be the lowest point in the country’s hockey history in this mega competition.

The only consolation with which they might take the field today is that New Zealand have never defeated Pakistan in a hockey match in an Olympiad! Of the six matches since Melbourne 1956, Pakistan have won five while one ended in a draw.

I missed the matches but some surprises in Men's semi-finals:

Netherlands 1-1 Germany (Germany win 4-3 on pens)

Spain 3-2 Australia

------------------------
Saturday 23 August

Men's Bronze medal match: 11 am UK time
Netherlands v Australia

Men's Gold medal match: 1:30 pm UK time
Spain v Germany

----------------
somehow Chinese women's team have made the women's final by defeating Germany
