Er no. Akhtar is generally disliked by true cricket fans. Overrated at his peak. Embarrassing in his twilight years.

That sucks for the "true" cricket fans because Akhtar is still Pakistan's front line bowler.

Too few and far between for a true cricket fan. Too injured, too inconsistent for a true cricket fan. A true cricket fan is interested day in day out good performances for his team - not some showpony who couldn't even take 200 test wickets. Vastly overrrated - it was so obviously foreseeable for the last 15 years that his career would be an utter dissappointment.

A prize idiot of the highest order....makes Mohammed Asif sound intelligent!

Er......What are you saying overrated?how?

he has picked 244 wickets in just 160 ODI matches with a very good avg. of 24.78 and impressive strike rate of 31.2

not bad in tests too.

Don't give a hoot about jamodis - not many "true" cricket fans do. In tests he only got 178 wickets in a fitful career. To think people over the last 10 years here have been trying to call him a "great" bowler and he couldn't even take a darts maximium..... laughable..... absolutely laughable!

Yet you rate Afridi miles ahead who has barely even played test cricket. What's more laughable then that

Lol long live the "true" cricket fans.

Lol if "true" cricket fans don't like Akhtar then they shouldn't like Afridi as well. So why post in this thread? Which clearly compares Afridi with Akhtar.

Lol I don't think you understand your own point and have resorted to name calling the player and making remarks against me. Anyways you said afridi is miles ahead of Akhtar, did you not? Then you stated that a "true" cricket fan does not care about "jamodis" and brought up Akhtar's test stats. So from there can you explain to me on what basis you rated Afridi miles ahead?

Or are you saying that you are not a "true"cricket fan.

Shoaib Akhtar by a mile. A quality bowler, however flawed his character may be.

The only respect in which Afridi is in the same league as Shoaib is in the flawed character stakes. He may have talent, but it's what you do with your talent that counts.

yea your the only one who isn't an idiot. Despite being flat footed he bowls at that speed. its going to be a long time before we see another Akhtar. If you compare his prime to wasim, imran, waqar, only imran was more popular than him. not to long ago even shoaib malik was more popular than Afridi. Afridi has only recently started to perform last 2 years. before that there was a lot of people begining to get annoyed with him.

In Amir Shoail's language, Afridi plays like a 5 year old kiddo.

As for Shoaib Akhtar, when does he last for a complete series?

Both are popular figures but for all the wrong reasons.

I have always liked Shoaib Akhtar more.. Because Shoaib Akhtar is quality the run up. the action. his bowling his speed and delieveries he can bowl..

Shoaib akhtar as a fielder is quite poor..

Afridi I feel can bowl good some days and slog well sometimes.. But afridi is neither a quality bowler og batsman. His fielding is above avérage considering Pak standard...

For me Shoaib Akhtar the reason I started loving cricket.

Has to be the fan base(and not a very smart one at that) because the record(batting average 23, bowling average 35) most certainly isn't there and the absence of a decent record after 15 years and 300 ODIs just makes the talent point moot.

I like Shoaib Akhter, he is a star but PCB didnt looked after well. The way Indian respect their cricketers, Pakistan should do the same. This guy need most of the respect from PCB, all young cricketers and the captain. If he played all those games, we could of won most of them. His action, raw pace and aggression makes him the most entertaining player in Pakistan team.

The younger generation of Pakistan fans who are more modern tend to prefer ODI/T20's these days and the likes of Umar Akmal, Asad Shaiq, Shehzad Ahmed etc are the icons of their era's.

And I doubt the younger generation of Pakistan fans have witnessed the Akhtar's career during the time when he was at his peak and prime, where he was unstoppable, looking at him now, he's nearly a finished product who's severely lacking match fitness and struggling to find the best out of him.

Where Afridi is still capable of showing glimpse of quality and the approach he has against bowlers is what the youth like which is pure attacking and hardly any defensive shots. Also the memories of his superb individual performances during the T20 09 World cup.

But in general it's a tough call but I'd go for Afridi.

Tough call but it has to be Afridi for captaining us to the ODI series win against NZ and the close series against SA. His T20 WC knock that won it for us also puts him above Akhtar in my opinion.

Akhtar or Afridi.

Guys who was Bigger star not only in Pakistan but around the World who had performed more for Pakistan when it matter most

Akhtar mostly injured but when he played he did performed

Afridi mostly in team apart from now as he had started to perform better with the bowling but before when he was only used as batsman he would perform rarely.

alerady missing Akhtar :(

In Pakistan I would say Afridi, around the world I would say Akhtar.
Then again thats just my personal opinion.
Personally I love both guys and am really dissapointed Akhtar wasnt able to get a proper send off he deserved.
However I feel some people in Pakistan probly think hes done too much bad to look at his good however i feel people around the world think of Akhtar as purely the fastes bowler to play the game and manage to look past the controversies
Personally I prefer coz i love the excitement and X factor he brings to the team

After this World Cup, Afridi has earned lot of respect and appreciation. And he has become a bigger star than Akhtar.

Before the WC, it was Akhtar without a doubt.

Come on, is this a joke? Akhtar was truly world class from 1999 - 2005. Afridi is lucky to have been given as many chances as he has. He was primarily a batsman for most of his career and apart from the occasional knock was mostly useless. However in this world cup he was good.

In comparison - For most of their career Akhtar looked like taking wicket every bowl he bowled, where as Afridi looked like losing wicket every bowl he faced. So Akhtar >Afridi.

Shoaib Akhtar vs Shahid Afridi

who has a bigger fan base? To make a bit more relative and comparable, lets assume both players are still playing for Pakistan and are in their prime.

I feel Akhtar has a slight advantage since he is an offspring to our great fast bowling culture. He played with a lot of passion and commitment. Despite being surrounded by ppl with questionable links to outside influence, Akhtar was never called out for being a seller.

Afridi on the other hand is a crowd-pleaser and a crowd puller. He doesn't care what other think of his style of batting, he just does what the organ between his ears tell him to do

AZ, i think a poll is in order

Akhtar at the top of his game was the greatest fast bowler ... ever.

Afridi's fan base is unmatchable though.

Was just about to create the same thing myself.

Shoaib imo, he was a crowd puller all over the world, all the players loved him, his attitude, even if he didnt deliver, just seeing him run in off the boundary was pleasing enough. Afridi's innings hardly ever lasted, he wasn't even a regular until 04. The amount of people shoaib has inspired over the world is unbelievable, wanting to bowl 160 kph. Though if you polled during the WC, it wouldve been afridi as he was the captain and akhtar has been out of the team for a while. Though if you compare over the 13 years, akhtar wins. Even people who didnt know about cricket knew about shoaib.

Afridi has a greater fanbase in Pakistan but Shoaib was a greater attraction.

As players Akhtar is some way ahead, as he has performed at a level Afridi has not.

Shoaib is more highly-regarded globally.
Afridi has cultivated this image of being "one of us" in Karachi, so he gets massive support there.

in Pakistan, I would say perhaps Afridi.
worldwide, definitely Shoaib Akhtar.

personally I will always choose the Rawalpindi Express!

Akhtar was a great guy, but no one in Pakistan cricket can beat Afridi for his popularity.

Akhtar retired - People took that.

Afridi retired - Riots, even politicians had to come in.

nuff said.

Rameez Raja said that the ONLY person in Pakistan who is MORE Popular than Imran Khan is Shahid Afridi. In fact he said in todays time Afridi's popularity beats Imran Khan's at his playing days.

Rameez said this in an interview last year on Geo
