Tennis Matches Act as Bonding Sessions for Pakistan Squad

There were many lessons to be learnt for Pakistan cricketers from the disastrous tour of Australia. Some of the lessons for the future weren't just cricketing ones and it would seem that ensuring the team bonded at all times was one of those key lessons.

Whilst stories from the Caribbean have materialised regarding some disagreements from one or two of the other squads participating in the Twenty/20 World Cup, the Pakistani squad have found an interesting way of bonding and ensuring there were no squabbles, distractions or disagreements whilst in the Caribbean.

The Twenty/20 World Cup match and training schedule has been a punishing one for the Pakistanis and they have had to island hop from St Lucia and Barbados. However even during a hectic schedule as in the Caribbean, boredom can play a part, but the Pakistani players seem to have countered any boredom with a tennis competition of their own.

PakPassion.net has learnt that the players thought it would be a good way of passing spare time during the tour when the squad was not in match action or training. As well as helping with fitness and stamina, the tennis has also kept spirits up and has provided the squad with some "fun" moments.

A Winner Stays on Format was agreed within the squad with players pairing up with fellow squad members. Some of the doubles teams included the opening pairing of Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal, whilst Umar Akmal paired up with Mohammad Sami. Another pairing was the all Karachi duo of skipper Shahid Afridi and Fawad Alam, whilst Mohammad Asif's doubles partner was Khalid Latif.

PakPassion can confirm that there were no John McEnroesque tantrums from the players, no players walked off court sulking and no players asked to see the match referee whilst on the court.

The tennis competition is continuing until the end of the Twenty/20 World Cup and we can confirm that the current "rankings" have the Afridi/Alam and Kamran/Salman pairings fighting it out for top place.

Sources close to the team currently in St Lucia speaking to PakPassion stated "The tennis has been a good way of the boys bonding. They have had some good fun on the tennis court and it's definitely helped with their fitness and stamina levels. I would say they were pretty cool and laid back on the tennis court, rather like Roger Fedderer, instead of the firebrand John McEnroe. The pressure can get quite intense and these sort of fun activities definitely have helped the boys".
