Speaking to PakPassion.net, one member of the committee formed to make recommendations for next coach of Pakistani team, former batsman and team manager Zaheer Abbas expressed his personal preference for a Pakistani coach.

By Saj Sadiq (August 29, 2011)

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced that it had formed a four man committee to look for a new Coach after Waqar Younis' recent resignation.

Waqar confirmed that due to personal reasons he will no longer continue in the role of coach and the ongoing tour of Zimbabwe will be his last.

The PCB has asked Intikhab Alam, Zaheer Abbas, Naushad Ali and Rameez Raja, to "look for" Waqar's replacement.

Raja has consented to assist the Committee in the selection of the Coach, whilst former team manager and coach Intikhab Alam will act as Chairman of the Committee.

Whilst not entirely clear, the Committee's main responsibility seems to be to provide a recommendation to the PCB hierarchy.

Speaking to PakPassion.net one of the Committee members, former batsman and team manager Zaheer Abbas expressed his personal preference for a Pakistani coach.

"My preference is for the next coach of the Pakistan cricket team to be Pakistani. The team has made strides under Waqar's leadership and we need to build on this."

Stating what he thought should be the main qualities required for the role Abbas added "The individual should be non controversial, someone who has played at the highest level of the game for a lengthy period of time and must be a mature person."

Abbas feels that it would be extremely difficult for a non Asian coach to perform the role given the "situation" in Pakistan and stated "Although not entirely against a foreign coach, I think a non Asian coach would be worried about the situation in Pakistan and this may affect the time he can spend in the country and how well he can perform the job."

Abbas who was manager of the Pakistan team during the ball tampering disagreement with Darrell Hair at the Oval in 2006 also feels that the attitude of some Pakistani players needs to change to allow the coach to perform the role properly.

"The mindset and attitude of some of the Pakistani players needs to change to allow a coach to do his job properly. If there are any disagreements or misunderstandings, then no player should go running to the media, instead what should happen is that discussions should be held behind closed doors with the team management and Board. Any differences should be resolved internally and without the necessity to play the media card."

Abbas further added that the next coach should be awarded a long term contract and that the job specification should be communicated to all concerned parties so there is no confusion in responsibilities.

"I'd prefer if the next coach was given a 3 year contract. That way he knows that he has some security in the role and some time to mould the team. In addition, the role and responsibilities of the coach should be made clear to the coach himself and the captain, meaning that there should be no confusion on what the coach's responsibility and domain is and there is no overlapping of duties."

The Committee begins it's assignment later this week with Javed Miandad and Dav Whatmore the favourites for the role, although in a recent interview with PakPassion Mudassar Nazar expressed his preference for Aaqib Javed to be given the role.
