Suggestions that Umar Akmal will miss the limited-overs leg of the Zimbabwe tour because of health problems have been denied by a source very close to the 23 year old Pakistan batsman and the player himself.
The Pakistan Cricket Board asked Akmal to return to Pakistan from the West Indies so that he could be further examined by a neurologist after reports stated that he had suffered a seizure, but the source speaking with PakPassion.net stated “Umar is fine. He felt unwell in the Caribbean but that was due to fatigue caused by all of the travelling during the Caribbean Premier League. He was examined by the ICC’s doctor during the CPL and had various tests whilst he was in the West Indies and they all came back negative.”
The source further added “Umar is surprised by all of the stories emanating from the issue which was caused by fatigue and feels that things have been blown out of all proportion. He’s very disappointed at missing out on the tour of Zimbabwe particularly after he performed so well with the gloves and the bat on Pakistan’s recent tour of the West Indies. He feels that he is fit enough to tour Zimbabwe and shouldn’t have been excluded from the squad."
Akmal is expected to take his grievances to acting Chairman Najam Sethi and is looking to arrange a meeting with him shortly, where he wants to put his case forward regarding his omission from the tour of Zimbabwe as he feels he has been treated unfairly.
The source also added that the whole episode had caused distress to Umar and his family and that he was very disappointed and disheartened by what he termed an “agenda” against him in Pakistan cricket.
When contacted by PakPassion.net Akmal stated “I’m fit and healthy and just want to play cricket. Stories regarding my health have been exaggerated and I will present the facts to the Chairman shortly.”
